Novell Win98 Client

I moved some files to our second Novell 6.5 server, and discovered that the old Win 98 machine we still have won’t connect. The XP machine had no problem when I changed the login scripts to map drives on both servers, but the 98’s won’t map the new drives.
I remember using an ATTACH command several years ago.
Any help will be appreciated.

Maybe it’s only set up for IPX and the new server only has IP?

Are the two serverr in the same tree? If so the Attach command is unnecessary, a simple Map should work.

Also, did you install licensing on the new server? It should have an NLS_LSP object (run SETUPNLS if not), be able to find a 6.5 server license in the same container or above in the tree, and the user must be able to find a 6.5 user license in it’s same container or above in the tree.

You may have to force the Frame Type from Auto to whatever you are using. I’ve run into problems like that in the not too recently.

Crap. My wife worked on this software when she was at Novell (ZEN client testing manager, amongst other things; me, I was on WinNT/2k, I never touched Win98). I asked her about this issue, and she gave me a dumb look and asked, “who still uses Windows 98?” Oh well, I tried.

I seem to remember that 802.2 vs. 802.3 was an issue in the Win98 client.

Can you log in to the tree with the Win98 box? i.e. can you isolate the problem to the login script, or is the problem in the network layer?

I can log into a server on the tree, but just one.
I can map drives on the first server, but not the server I added.
Mapping a drive on the new server; the server is greyed out and the error message is that it is unavailable.

Thanks

Hmm. Keeping in mind I haven’t done this since 1999…

It sounds like network layer, then. Possibly an IPX/IP/NWIP configuration, or something else.

What protocol is the Win98 client using? IPX? IP? How about the servers? Is NWIP in the picture?

Another idea - are all machines on the same network segment, or is there a router between the client and one of the servers? What protocol is the router handling, IP or IPX?

It was the client.
The servers are running IP, the 98 clients IP and IPX.
When I realized the 98s in the lab weren’t screaming at me, I found them using the 3.4 client; the ones that wouldn’t log were using 3.1.
Thanks, everyone. I couldn’t get to the Board when I discovered the fix, and was working on that damn Gradequick app until I went out the door.
Damn, I hate '98.
