Now Halloween turns political!

re the bitch cited in the OP, she’s, well, a bitch. note that Grosse Pointe is an upscale suburb (doesn’t excuse her behavior)

re: side issues - I’ve got no problem w/folks bringing their kids to political rallies in general (reserve the right to have clarifications). re: ** Hentor’s** kids, see no problem w/that either.

My son (now 24) watched the vp debate between Gore and Quayle when he was 8-it was his choice.

I was, otoh, a politically abused child who was forced to distribute political literature for Goldwater/Miller, and L Brooks Paterson.

Frankly, Frank, feel free to fuck yourself.

It’s not a failure to have kids interested in the world around them, and it’s not your business to be trying to call good parenting a failure.

You know, there must be something in our water…I’ve been agreeing more and more with both lissener AND liberal. What’s wrong?

The only people who really support this are most of the assholes at Free Republic. (I can’t help it-lately every time I find a really goofy election story, I HAVE to check it out, just to point and laugh.)

Hell, I’m guessing that instead of eggs, this woman is going to get her house plastered with Obama/Biden stickers and/or signs.
Quite frankly, I’m much, MUCH more offended by the older teens who go around without costumes, not even taking their younger siblings/cousins/nieces/nephews, etc with them. (If you’re going to get in a few more years, at LEAST make an effort and put on a COSTUME, dammit!). Obama/McCain stickers? Meh.
And I went to a CATHOLIC school, and we were having mock elections since I was in second grade. And no, we weren’t told to vote Republican. Just asked who we were voting for. (I remember my friends and I making up the slogan “Dukakis is the Duke of Puke” in fifth or sixth grade)

This is a good point. After all the men in the house had died or moved out, my mother stopped doing trick-or-treat for this reason. The older teenagers made her very nervous, as an older woman with health problems who lived alone. She didn’t like doing it, since she loved to give out candy to the kids, but she just doesn’t feel safe opening her door when 1/4 of the trick-or-treaters are 17 or 18 year old guys.

Agree absolutely. Some years we get a ton of these guys. This year wasn’t too bad. My wife only saw one group of 16 year olds, and she said at least they had balloons, and a couple of them were doing the old wearing girls clothes bit.

A couple of girls who were almost too old had the best costumes I saw - they were Betty and Wilma.

One of my son’s friends was pretty lame. He put on a Crosby jersey and sprayed his hair gray. He was “a 70 year old Sidney Crosby.” I told him he should be going as a season tickey holder. He should have had a souvenir cup and some nachos in his hands.

Obama has billed himself to be a uniter and a breath of fresh air. I wish his supporters would respect that platform and quit acting like little dickheads.

Political stickers are inappropriate in a social setting. End of story. I don’t want to see a Wendy’s worker donning his McCain/Palin sticker nor do I want to see a Trick-or-Treater donning an Obama/Biden sticker. Unless, of course, he is dressed up as Senator Obama.

Hey. Now, don’t you dis Crosby.

nothing for the woman who announced “no candy for children of Obamma supporters”? See, I see that as way fucking lower than an adult who annouces their preference.

IRL, I always encourage everyone to vote, never ask them who. I don’t do bumper stickers, have in past done signs, but not in the last decade or so. I don’t have n problem w/olks wearing t-shirts or buttons (tho’ I’d pefer folks in positions of authority, including the clergy, to refrain from them while at work. the gal fryin’up french fries ? I don’t see the harm.

All I know is “Abe Lincoln” better remember this year’s pistol-whipping the next time he thinks about ringing my doorbell on Halloween.

I like your kid already

I find this thread is getting disturbing. Is this country really so divided politically that people think it is not safe to express a political opinion?

I live in a state so predictable, I’m not sure I’ve ever voted for a major party candidate; is it different in swing states?

DO cars with bumper stickers get keyed? Does no one wear campaign buttons these days?

[And Trick or Treating is NOT a social event, it is a sanctioned protection racket]

Look, it’s not like you’re going to be forced to marry a pumpkin (unless the extreme Gourdists get their way), and we will continue to fight for the rights of all vegetable-lovers to marry the object of their affection (whether they be enamored of flashy New World cucurbitae or your own humble Old World brassica). :stuck_out_tongue:

No, I’m used to this. I’m not only almost always right, I’m also usually waaaay ahead of my time. Most people will catch up eventually, Guin, you’re just that much ahead of the rest.

I’m visiting family in Michigan this weekend and went to a costume party (way out in the Obama-hating back country) where there was only one couple dressed like (I’m guessing) politicians- business clothes and long dark trench coats, the woman with a McCain/Palin “press pass” looking badge, and the guy with an Obama badge. I looked more closely at his badge and Obama’s head was inside a rifle target. :frowning: :frowning:

Odd, I’d never thought of you as such a vile little cunt.

Ignorance fought.

Hypothetical children are my favorite kind of children. I hate all the rest.

Last year I went to a Halloween party in Salt Lake City of all places(had a friend that had to move there, so we all went to visit then). I dressed up as a “War Pig”; black suit, red tie, whiskey in a tumbler, cigar, devil horns, pig snout, fangs, blood and oil smears on my hands and face, and to tie it all together a really creepy/sinister looking Bush/Cheney campaign button(from ebay). Anyway, we had to make a beer run and at the time the only option was Walmart. So there I was in a Utah Walmart in full Bush/Cheney-warpig-vampire-devil-thing gear and to my shock(and pleasure) I received at least 2-to-1 smiles to sneers.
ETA: As for the lady in the OP, I simply don’t have the words. Just fuck her…and **Frank **too for that matter.

It’s a SECULAR holiday? Sure, it’s lost some (most) of its religious meaning and it never became completely Christianized, but as the Eve of All Saints Day I appreciate the little bastards running around, scaring off demons and performing the vigil that we American adults have forgotten.

And if you think 13 is too young to have ones own political beliefs, you weren’t around in the late 60s. And 7 years old is the Age of Reason, when one becomes morally responsible. All kids should be politically informed, to the degree that suits their maturity. Not able to vote, of course, lest they start writing in the Jonas Brothers and the Little Mermaid.

Look, jerk (and I say that with regret, because usually I have a lot of respect for your views and your expression of them), you’re the one who came around asking for other posters’ opinions on whether it was appropriate for kids to wear political stickers when out trick-or-treating.

Most of us who disagreed with you responded very respectfully and temperately, explaining that while we didn’t think this ranked as an ethical issue, we thought it was mildly inappropriate, and explaining why we thought so.

So you can take your snarkastic comments about “the sacraments of Halloween” and stick them where the Halloween candy ended up. Cold day in hell before I bother responding to anything that purports to be an honest solicitation of honest opinions from you again, beeyatch.

No he didn’t.
He just told a story about his kids, and **Frank **jumped on him for that.
Just go back and read the first post by Hentor (#3). It’s anecdotal- there’s no question in it. Frank replies later bringing up this whole issue.

That wasn’t very nice of you.
