…when I go shopping at Wal Mart at 4 in the morning… they just put in self check-outs! I’m typically not ‘all there’ this late, so talking can be a burden, now it won’t be. This makes me happy.
Yeah, they tried some self-checkouts in our area to reduce employee headcount, but they stopped using them because it requires employees to oversee them. Kinda defeats the point.
Not really. They can have about four of those things overseen by only one employee, whereas they normally need to have one employee per checkout lane. This way, the only need 1/4 of the checkout people they normally do.
Yeah, but they only ever had about 4 employees with about 15 checkout lanes anyway. And with 8 self-checkouts, they’re too cheap to have another 2 employees watch over them. Seriously, they don’t use them anymore.
I assure you that neither WalMart nor any other store has ever had an OPEN checkout lane without a dedicated cashier. If they have four lanes open, and close three lanes so that two cashiers can be laid off, while one can handle four self-checkout kiosks, then that’s a reduction in headcount of two, with one more queue running. Your “fifteen lanes” have nothing to do with anything.
I went into a WalMart yesterday (my wife wanted Coke), and discovered the self-checkouts – it was bliss. I hate WalMart, and only go there under coercion, but the self-checkout will make things nicer. (I hate WalMart and everything it stands for, to be more precise)
