Now I hate Islam - Young Iraqis Lose Religion

http://www.iht.com/articles/2008/03/03/africa/youth.php

So, er, do you hate islam?

I think this emerging attitude in the young is a healthy one, both because I’m a godless atheist who likes godless atheism on principle, and also because if they’re complaining about it, then the brand of islam they’re laboring under probably is an oppressive regime, which would make it appreciably worse than it needs to be as a religion. Either way, I hope their attitude spreads and either breaks or moderates the religion in the area. (As opposed to their attitude getting them shot or something.)

Young people sick of violence and oppression and start to question. The downside would be?

For them? Death. But I see what you mean, this is a positive step in the “big picture”.

Thank you for sharing, but I am wondering what the debate is.

I do hope it catches on quickly and spreads fast.

Well, they certainly seem to be in the corner and/or spotlight these days.

I’m all for secularization, so I hope its true. But I’m not sure the article really makes a convincing case that it’s happening. It’s basically a bunch of man-on-the-street interviews with Iraqis who say that it is.

Also, did it ping anyone else’s BS detectors? The way a lot of the paragraphs were worded, it felt like the writers were leaving out any information that didn’t support their thesis: we hear that 40 people were interviewed, and that some were disillusioned with Islam, but they don’t say how many. And that Sadr’s religious gatherings are down from ‘04-‘05, but what happened in 06’-07’? No information? Did he stop having meetings during those years? They give the proportion of current detainees that are religiously motivated, but not those proportions in past years.

Overly suspicious perhaps, but I wonder if anyone else was left with the same impression?

OK, that’s a positive development. I just hope that the West can find a savvy-enough way of helping to cultivate it, as opposed to the way the Republican-led effort has been thus far.

What they need is a strong ruler that imposes a secular government. Too bad we killed Saddam.

While moderatrely interesting (subject to caveats already posted), I see no debate, here.

Off to IMHO.
(mswas, please put some effort into your OP in the future.)

Blah

I thought it would be controversial.

Maybe on a board with many conservative Islamic followers. But on this board?

Young people losing religion and starting to think for themselves … sounds like good news to me.

This is all bigger than you, and you are not me. It’s also bigger than a life on the run from the United States and her friends on this night made of jewels. La, da da, da da, da-da-da-da-da, water colours into the ocean, water colours into the ocean.

In what way? Do you think that because some people here don’t jump on the ‘hate Islam’ bandwagon that they therefore would be in favor of repressive theocracies? I honestly don’t get what would be controversial in the OP.

I don’t know. I thought there would be some debate. shrugs Should we debate whether or not it’s worthy of a debate so that it can be moved back to GD? :stuck_out_tongue:

Good for them.

Maybe we could see the beginning of a movement towards a more moderate, liberal version of Islam. It’s long overdue.

Now if we could just get my relatives to reciprocate by not forwarding any more “Kill the Muslims” emails…

Just stare at them. You know, with those wobbling eyes and that ponderous electronic hum. They’ll do what you say.

That would be nice.
