That’s what they did with “Gulf of America”. I just assumed that if they went along with this at all, it would only be for US ip addresses. I had a tiny hope Google would see this one and say, “oh fuck it”, and revert the other two changes. (Gulf of Mexico and Denali.)
It’s not that “Trump is too dumb to notice”, it’s that different countries routinely have different names for places, usually because of language differences. And American executive orders only have meaning within America.
In fairness, google have long had the policy to show the name of a place as used in the country where it’s viewed from. Like the German city of Köln is listed as Cologne as viewed from the UK. Picking an exception to this based on the fact that it’s clearly bloody stupid is presumably just not worth the fight.
They’re a major map company, but they’re also a small part of a major tech company that does not especially want a petty fight with the US administration. It wouldn’t even surprise me if someone actually directly contacted google and demanded they change it, knowing that’s the first place people will look to see if it’s really changed.
As well as Lake Ontario still being Lake Ontario, the Gulf of Mexico currently shows up as ‘Gulf of Mexico (Gulf of America)’ from the UK, if you’re wondering.
Huh. 25 years ago a friend came back from a Boy Scout thing there and told me that nobody calls it that, it’s Denali, and the people who live near it care a lot about that.
My cite is that Trump has repeatedly accused the Democrats of stealing elections and he only accuses other people of committing crimes that he himself has committed.
This may not be a legally admissible standard but to deny its validity is naive.
I’m not sure if it would work on a phone, but maybe try using a private/incognito browser so it’s only seeing your Norse IP address but not your log in credentials (I’m assuming you’re also logged into google).
