Now that Elon Musk has bought Twitter - now the Pit edition (Part 1)

At least the Aztec was popularized by a certain Walter White.

Just blot that thought out of your mind. I’ve just been indicating there is a certain date-stamped stylistic method to the madness.

Now feel free to drink that realization away.

Back in the before times, when I was not of the strong opinion that Musk is a giant dick and an idiot… I was awaiting the unveiling of Tesla’s truck, as I like EV’s, and will definitely be in the market for a truck for practical reasons like hauling stuff.

When it was shown, I watched the video, and came away thinking…

"Oh. That’s not… good. At all.
Do not want. Will not buy. "

I was hoping for something useful.

As well as something that didn’t induce  at first sight.
I’m trying to imagine a current truck owner not being embarrased in owning that piece of unmitigated calf’s diarrhoea. Even if they somehow rolled out at something improbable like $30,000, I’ll still stick with my '95 2500, thanks.

Heaven forbid one of those things gets dirt on them. Ew.

The folks at Rivian must have been totally delighted when Elmo unveiled that pile of garbage – that is, after they stopped laughing.

Ford almost certainly couldn’t care less as my understanding is that there is way more demand for the F-150 Lightning than they can possibly fill in the short term.

But you do have decent options other than giving your money to Elmo even if he was producing a proper truck.

Yes, if there was a F-150 at my local Ford dealership, they’d likely have my money shortly. As it is, I’m not keen on waiting and/or paying an extra premium above the List Price.

Who in the world is going to pay more than $11/month for ad-free Twitter other than Muskrats?

Oh… wait I see his plan.

Although one wonders if this will annoy what advertisers are left?

He should do a $100/month option where he “promises” to answer at least one of your tweets “soon”.

So his revised business plan is

(a) ad revenue that has collapsed is still too high

(b) since the numbers just don’t add up on replacing ad revenue by monetizing users, he’s going to test the demand curve by steadily increasing subscription prices and hoping that everyone pays up

…as a person who always wanted a personal landram:

And who really wanted to live the Ark II:

I’m gonna apologise in advance, and I’m prepared for the waves of mockery, but…

I don’t hate the Cybertruck.

I completely acknowledge the design is impractical, and probably just flat-out-dangerous to drive, and I would never, ever, even think about buying the Cybertruck.

But there is a small part of me, that when I look at it, thinks, very quietly, that “it isn’t that bad.”

And every time I think that, another part of my soul just dies.

It’s okay, we’ll start a support group for folks like ourselves and @Tamerlane, so we don’t have to hide in shame from civilized society.

:stuck_out_tongue_winking_eye:

Hardcore isn’t good enough. Time for some Xtreme Hardcore. Next will be Xtreme Hardcore to the Max!

I feel awful for a lot of the people who are left, because you know a lot of them have to be on visas and have nowhere to go. I don’t feel bad at all for the ones not stuck there who have opted to remain of their own accord.

Well, you gave me a good laugh at least. And the Ark II is awesome.

This doesn’t really surprise me at all.

Apparently Elmo is following the advice of former Theranos CEO Elizabeth Holmes, who famously espoused the mantra “fake it till you make it”. She was sentenced to 11 years for fraud.

This.

I have to believe that various other social-tech outfits, both established like Facebook and startups we’ve never heard of are actively whipping up their own min viable product version of a twitter-equivalent service. Once the stampede starts to whoever is next, it’ll be unstoppable.

Twitter has been hard to make money with, but it’s also a darn handy product for mass notifications, mass (self-)promotion, etc. Somebody will square this circle, and I predict it won’t be Elmo standing on the twisted wreckage of pre-buyout Twitter.

Thank you! I’ve been trying to put into words the look of that “truck”. Closest I got was “Computer graphics from the era of the Money For Nothing music video”. (gif)

eta: Oh my gosh, the cybertruck was inspired by that dog!

The aesthetic always reminded me of that late 80s Atari arcade game, Hard Drivin’:

(Though that’s a Sega Genesis screenshot. The arcade graphics weren’t much less angular.)

I think the Cybertruck is ugly as hell, but truck buyers might go for it if it made up in utility what it lacks in prettiness. I mean, it has some interesting features. The stainless body should be better in environments where you get scratched and dinged up a lot. It has a few interesting features around the box and tailgate.

However, that raked, flat windshield is going to be a wonderland of reflections. The angled high sides on the box will make it difficult to get material in and out of the truck. Rearward and rear 3/4 visibility is godawful, and working trucks often have to maneuver in tight spaces and move around where people are walking. Rear seat headroom looks terrible. So even in terms of function it’s a loser.

Maybe the big delay for releasing the truck means they are going to surprise us with a redesign - I can’t imagine their internal research is turning up a lot of love for the design.

It might have sold when it was going to be the only truck available. Now there are electric trucks from the big three plus Rivian, with Toyota and others on the way. I can’t see Cybertruck surviving that competition unless it’s really cheap or has some killer, must-have feature. The only thing I can think of is its supposed 500 mile range. Given what we’re finding out about real world range in EV pickups, that will be a selling point. But I don’t think it’s enough.

As a guy that had a friend with a DeLorean, I suspect not. That was a super high maintenance surface if you cared at all about it looking ok.

I think the biggest problem with the Cybertruck’s styling is that when it was unveiled, it was shocking and strange enough that it probably could have been moderately successful. Now at this point it’s just stale. It’s long past it’s shelf life even though it’s not out yet.
