Now that Elon Musk has bought Twitter - now the Pit edition (Part 1)

I know the blue check doesn’t mean diddly squat anymore, but I seem to recall a tweeter with a similar name doing good reporting on Ukraine. I hope it’s just my failing memory because I hate to think I’ve liked tweets by this person.

That’s WarMonitor3 that is the pro-Ukraine account, not WarMonitors.

That’s @Warmonitor3, though I’ve heard comments that while his intentions are good, his tweets both hits and misses.

Thank you both. I am glad it’s not the same account.

I believe he has sources on the ground in the Ukrainian military, so he’s able to report military actions early and in fine detail. I regard him as a pretty good source, on the whole, and have great respect for the hours he puts into his work.

It’s the Community Note that really makes that tweet work.

Elmo: stop being so weird about slavery, you guys, all the cool civilizations were doing it.

:joy::sweat_smile: holy shit this is why we need a like button

Eta: oh he claims that’s what he actually meant? …weird insult…

Only in the last century it was made rare? Hmm guess that means the US wasn’t one of the last nations to outlaw slavery after the US Civil War was fought in 1923. Tracks for me!

Elmo doesn’t know history. “Since humans existed” is utter bullshit.

Elon Musk is pretty stupid about most things. He just has a really big platform that lets him demonstrate that to the world on a regular basis.

Is this supposed to mean that, 'because we’ve, “always done it.” that it’s ok? If not what the hell point is he trying to make?

Honestly, I think most people are probably a bit more tuned into history than this bozo. You have to be a pretty pathetic person to be a slavery apologist. Grrr

I get the impression that if you asked Elmo when slavery was abolished, he’d say 1993.

Considering his attitude toward his employees, I think he would mentally add “unfortunately” to that answer.

And now, an ongoing Twitter thread about how misinformation and hoaxes relating to the Gaza War are being allowed to go unchecked under Elmo’s watch;

Legal slavery is long dead. Illegal slavery is still a reasonably big business today.

I’ve no doubt Musk personally knows somebody who has a few.

Elon (and a lot of his acolytes) have a grade three schoolyard sense of morality. There is no “good” and “bad” – just “who’s getting chewed out by teacher” and who isn’t. And it’s not fair that teacher is chewing out Americans for having slavery when they aren’t also chewing out the 16th century Ottomans.

If illegal, non-chattel slavery counts as slavery, then the informal thrall-like slavery backed only by threats of violence that I’m sure has existed since humans existed also counts. Chattel slavery may also have existed since trade has existed, which is a pretty darn long time, but I don’t know if there is evidence for that or not.

North Korea exports between 100,000 and 200,000 slaves each year, citizens forced to work hard labor jobs in foreign countries with their paychecks going to North Korea.

One of the sad ironies is that “export slave” is among the best jobs in NK, they are generally better fed and receive better medical care than the average NK citizen, their lives aren’t as regimented and they even have opportunities for side work. North Koreans bribe government officials for these jobs.

I thought NK’s MO was to convince the citizens that the rest of the world was an even more desolate hell hole and that they were lucky to be in North Korea. What happens when these workers see the putside world and realize how shitty their own living conditions are in comparison?
