It’s not physically addictive, like, say, alcohol or heroin. It’s not even very psychologically addictive, like, say, marijuana.
An overdose of water can kill you. Everything has risks.

But… this is not the thread for arguing drugs, this is the thread for complaining about Elon, a shame on all thinking South Africans.
EtA… who the fuck calls their child “Elon”? I see from the internet it is Hebrew in origin, but not at all a common name. In any case Yahweh must be pissed off.
This way we don’t have to pity his name-mates.
Elon is the title of the prime minister of Mars in a novel written by Wernher von Braun.
Not kidding.
A dyslexic person who really likes Christmas.
Buying ads is not efficient. Buying voters is the way to go these days.
Musk’s PAC offers $100 to Wisconsin voters in pitch against “activist judges”
hmmm, I only wish Elon (I mean Noel) would have a mysterious disappearance.
Xmas?
Nevermind.
As a percentage of total Americans or as a percentage of users?
As a percentage of death from drugs in the United States. I’ll link to my post with the CDC info.
That’s not true. Ketamine has been cited to lead to strong psychological dependence and mild physical dependence. Comparing it to “water” in terms of danger is absolute ignorance.
When administered by medical professionals it can be very safe. When abused, it can be very dangerous. There are centers that handle ketamine addiction alongside other drugs that are abused.
It’s true that you don’t have symptoms of withdrawal like you do with many other drugs, but it can destroy your life if you develop a serious addiction. People who are prone to addiction to other substances are at more risk than others. There are also genetic factors at work. It’s true that it’s not on the same footing as many drugs that people abuse, but it’s absolutely not safe when not properly administered.
To get back to Elon, the fact that he is known to be a habitual user should absolutely be a concern (among many) as he is being given unprecedented individual power in the government without any real justification aside from “Trump wants to”.
Alternatively, instead of a concern, I will cross my fingers that it leads to excellent news.
LOL, fair enough.
I dispute this, though I recognise your cite.
I live in the drug-use subculture, ketamine is widely available as it is a commonly used “stable at room temperature” anaesthetic, stability without refridgeration being important in the third world.
No one I know who uses ketamine has developed a dependency. I’ve not. Neither have my social group.
I mean there is a thing, “ketamine therapy”, where, sure, the doses are carefully administered,
But actual psychological or physical dependency seems far fetched
I’ll take the expertise of medical professionals over the opinion of a recreational user.
This is the Straight Dope, after all.
(But I do recognize and respect your courtesy on the subject, even here in the Pit.)
I mean, sure. I’m not a medical professional. You have no reason to trust me.
Even as insane Elon is, I doubt his “special K” intake makes much difference. He’s known to “microdose” ketamine, whereas my useage is “macrodose”.
I do it for fun, Elon apparently does it for reasons I do not understand but are probably up there with high level execs using cocaine. This is a disasociative chemical.
Dissasociatives include such fun chemicals aa PCP, which despite the bad press, is not too different from ketamine. Same class.
That means your body and your mind are not really connected anymore. You can walk, sure, but it is challenging. It is better to lie down in case you damage yourself. Your mind is no longer in charge of your body.
This is the worst thing when you are a CEO of a major company (or companies)
He says he microdoses.
Watching his behavior in some situations, I question that. For example, CPAC where he wore sunglasses the entire time and revealed extremely bloodshot eyes when they slipped down, or the interview last year when he told advertisers to go fuck themselves and demonstrated classic amphetamine behavior.
Those instances don’t look like ketamine to me, but I don’t believe for a second that his only drug use is supervised ketamine microdosing.
Yeah, it’s scary shit.
If you’re doing it in the privacy of your own home, more power to you. Do it if it makes you happy, and hopefully you’re being as safe as you can be.
But this guy is a whole other story.
