Admittedly it’s hard to envision how a freewheeling market could work in a place where air, and potable water, have to be manufactured.

Substantially all potable water on Earth today is manufactured.
At least in the sense that non-potable water is captured from the environment of streams, rivers, lakes, wells, and oceans, then processed into potability using a big local factory / facility, then distributed from there to end users.
And oddly enough, this provision of potable water is usually a government civic works monopoly. In the places it isn’t, potable water is scarce and expensive. Even if non-potable water is plentiful.

Generally true. At a minimum, tap water has to be filtered and chlorinated. Still, here in Canada – at least in Ontario – there are many streams, both underground and above-ground – whose water is clean and safe to drink. It’s one reason that bottled spring water is practically free – you’re really just paying for the container, transportation, and some profits along the way. In fact up north, there are many lakes in wilderness camping areas like Killarney Park where the lake water is perfectly safe to drink. I am living evidence of that fact.
For sure wilderness and some rural water is consumed right from the environment. As a percentage of all consumption it’s a rounding error if that big.
But yeah, very satisfying to drink.
Satisfying; the bear piss, the organic quadrillion microorganisms, made us stronger, it did. I drank it too on hikes . I’m so proud of my grandkids drinking from the water hose filling the splash pool. Something I did a zillion years ago. Nutrients (other stuff), it does a body good.
If nothing else, you consume all your “wild” water brought to a boil in the form of coffee, tea and soup.
The only time I drank from a stream was when I was hiking in the middle of nowhere, Iceland, and it was meltwater from a glacier five miles away. It was, indeed, refreshing.
That’s about the only time I’d drink from a stream. It’s not the bear piss that’s the problem, it’s the bear shit. Giardia is everywhere.

The Economist, whether one likes their politics or not, is famously hard on bullshit wherever they find it.
How a bullshit-filled blowhard like musk thought he’d come out looking good dealing with someplace like them is hard to fathom. Of course my comment assumes musk is still capable of logical rational thought. Which seems an increasingly unsustainable assumption.

I have a feeling there’s some context missing here. “High income” will be limited to the techbros, and perhaps some honorary 'bros like the Trump clan. The normies — those who haven’t been liquidated as surplus or inferior — will be privileged to live where they are told and work at whatever jobs they are assigned in return for whatever goods and services their superiors deign to grant them. All normie jobs will have the ultimate goal of creating wealth for the 'bros; and if an individual can no longer contribute to that goal (or becomes “uppity”) … well, they shoot horses, don’t they?
