Does it address the fact that Bluesky is an open standard protocol that by design is beyond the control of the company that created it?
I’m on Bluesky. It is so much less shitty than X. And initial data is showing that real engagement is actually higher.
Sounds like I need to get off my butt and get on there. I keep putting it off since I want to actually have a decent profile. Also, I swear I made one before, but I cannot find it.
A huge wave of new users has hit, and inevitably a lot of them can’t not talk about the site they left (like when people talk about the person they just broke up with), but it’s so freaking wholesome compared to the other place.
Part of me wants to get on Bluesky to support it, but I never really used Twitter either, so I’d probably just end up with an idle account over there too.
Yup.
They picked up a big chunk of Brazilians when Elon was having his little tiff with Brazil, and a lot of users went out of their way to welcome them. One still sees a fair number of posts in Portuguese but it’s not enough to be an annoyance.
Yes, that Brazilian wave was something. This (what I guess I’ll call a) second wave feels like mostly people fleeing Xitter not just because it’s getting worse, but because of Elmo’s support for Trump + the election outcome. That’s spawning a bunch of starter packs so that people find each other quickly, which is great. (I am on a relatively obscure starter pack and woke up this morning to 9 follows, so there’s definite energy to multi-follow)
Concerning Twitter or Xitter, just want to salute the FC St. Pauli, a football (soccer) club from Hamburg with strong political convictions, who has decided to leave the site for good:
The message in English:
You can find our statement on our farewell to X on BlueSky. Feel free to follow us there. We are out of here.
The Guardian is leaving too:
What took them so long? Whatever: better late than never.
According to the chief data reporter of the Financial Times, who makes a lot of interesting graphs, the change in the definition of “block” also caused a huge spike in defections from X.
I’ve been on Bluesky for maybe a year, and now I’m seeing a surge in new members from my friend collection on Facebook, a lot of whom weren’t even on Xitter, or had already left it.
Elmo is looking for “super high-IQ” people who pay for Twitter and want to work 80 hours a week for free, which sounds self-comtradictory to me.
There are certainly people who would score high on an IQ test yet have little sense. It’s probably not all that uncommon; I’ve even known a few, including a high school friend and later coworker.
I feel a bit bad for such people because they’d totally be taken advantage of.
Seems counterproductive
I wouldn’t want to hire, even as a “volunteer” or whatever they’re calling 'em, anybody dumb enough to fall for such an obvious scam.
Then again, I’ve never accused Elmo of genius
I have a suspicion that DOGE is going to end up being Elmo and Ramaswamy wandering around to the heads of real departments and just harassing them on a daily basis.
They’ll wind up walking up to a lot of government buildings to suspiciously find the shades drawn and all the lights turned off suddenly.
I’m envisioning a childish slapfight in front of Foggy Bottom after they can’t agree on who gets to ride shotgun in the Uber.
So says the South African.
And this right here is exactly why Trump’s pushing to have federal employees’ status redesignated: so he will have the authority to fire them.
