Fairly sure but I’m no legal expert. My understanding is that social media companies have non-exclusive rights to use posted content but that’s not the same as owning it. Otherwise Twitter would own, say, all government information posted by the white house.
He doesn’t mean it like that. He means close them down and confiscate their assets. If he has any kind of influence in the coming administration, it can start with a revocation of their nonprofit status.
I get requests like that at work; being asked to do something unnecessary because it’s already done, or get rid of something we don’t have. I always respond the same way; I put the fingers of each hand on my temples, blink dramatically, and say, “Done.”
Some flunky could do that for Elon, then he can turn around and declare to ignorant MAGA folks that ACLU no longer has any federal funding thanks to his efforts, and he’ll be called a hero and a genius.
Yes. I gather the Trumpites plan to close down not only the ACLU but also Planned Parenthood, Democracy Docket, the American Federation of Teachers, NAACP, VoteVets . org, the Brennan Center for Justice, and dozens more non-profits that could conceivably annoy the Dear Leader, regardless of whether or not they receive federal funds. (I believe that NPR is also prominent on the ‘get rid of’ list but it definitely does get a bit of federal funding.) And the method will at least start with (as you say) revoking their nonprofit status. All sorts of other harassment is likely, too. Some might even be designated as terrorist organizations (or as giving aid to such).
And as @Atamasama says, Elon and other Trumpites can sell this idea as “defunding” even if there is NO government funding involved, because they know that “defunding” is incredibly popular with people who love to be indignant about supposed misuse of their taxes.
According to an article published today in JAMA, ketamine “diversions” (ketamine intercepted before reaching patients) are up 38%. Just felt like I should mention it. (I can link it if someone has a JAMA subscription, but I don’t have a free link)
The earlier 2019 trump-era tax code changes that increased the standard deduction accomplished a lot of that already.
Note that much (admittedly not all) of the increase was sleight of hand; it merely rolled what had been tax “allowances” for self & spouse into the standard deduction. While killing the allowances for other dependents.
This also had the effect that people who used to get the allowances and itemize no longer could. So a tax increase for them.
I finally went and deleted all my posts (but not replies to other posts because there were too damn many) on X and deactivated my account, after being off it for over a month.
