Sergio Aragonés got me school detention in 3rd grade.
We had to create some type of artwork for a school project. I looked to Mad Magazine for inspiration, since my older brother had a large collection and I was an avid reader.
I submitted a series of drawings in the style of Aragonés’ “marginals.” My teacher was ecstatic over my comics and said I had real talent! She boasted about me in front of the class and to fellow teachers. I was over the moon.
It all came crashing down a day later. One of the fellow teachers that my teacher boasted to told her about Mad Magazine and how my artwork looked suspiciously like Sergio Aragonés’ art. [the rat fink tattle tale!]
Apparently, they did a little research and ruled that my comics were an exact copy of some Mad Mag marginals. I thought MM was off-limits to teachers?!

In my defense, I didn’t understand plagiarism in 3rd grade…and I didn’t trace the comics, I just…uh…copied them.
Lesson learned; I never plagiarized again.
My 9th grade yearbook, from the 1977-78 year, had a line drawing copied from the Al Hirschfeld depiction of Aerosmith for their “Draw The Line” album. I have no idea how many NINAs it contained, or if the artist knew about that.
