I’m saddened that a hardworking bloke would take his life, and horrified for all the people who witnessed it. But I do have to give him points for creativity.
I say he gets points for intelligence, of sorts. Hanging yourself to death is awfully difficult, I hear. His horizontal noose pretty much makes sure he dies.
If you’re gonna take yourself out you might as well be creative about it. It reminds me of he guy who made a guillatine and that old man who built a robot that shot him.
I’ve got to differ with Covered In Bees–I’ve heard that hanging oneself can actually be easier than expected because the noose constricts the blood vessels in the neck and cuts off the blood supply to the brain, causing quick unconciousness long before the person actually dies from lack of oxygen. Maybe a medical professional could chime in on this?
The problems that I’ve heard about include getting the rope the correct length so you actually hang. Nevermind finding somewhere high enough to hang from so you still actually hang. Then there’s the problem of finding something or somewhere that will support your weight and then some, to account for the downward pull.
Ha. When I saw the thread title I though this might be a chance for me tell the story of a Darwin, Australia man who tied a rope around a tree, then his neck and floored his car. He was found by a cyclist the next morning. It’s obviously a popular method these days.
Reminds me of a case here a few months ago, some broken hearted bloke walked up a bridge, put a bag over his head, a nylon rope around his neck, tied the rope to the railing and jumped off the bridge; grotesquly enough his neck was severed just enough so that it held the head and body together for a few swings, spray painting the side of the bridge in blood before the body dropped off leaving the head hanging from the rope inside the plastic bag.
It wasn’t a pretty sight.
About 15 years ago at an Investigation Course, a Coroner told us about that method being used. A couple had placed nooses around their necks that were tied to a tree. They were in a panel van and simply took off until the rope caught up with them. Wasn’t very pleasant for the people who discovered them. Nor the Coroner.
IIRC there was a link in that thread that lead to some lines from (a movie?), where a guy describes a method of suicide resulting in the person hanging upside down above a sidewalk holding his own severed head in his hands.
