NPR: piece on Feminism survey. 3 out of 4 top-named Feminists are of color

It was just broadcast, so the podcast version will be posted here in a bit: Poll Finds 3 Women Of Color As New Face Of Feminism : NPR

The survey polled who was seen as a feminist today. The top four results were:

  1. Michelle Obama
  2. Oprah
  3. Hillary Clinton
  4. Beyoncé

I found it interesting information. I was also tempted to just list first names for all of them ;), but didn’t for no particular reason. I don’t really feel I’m in a position to comment on “what it means” if it in fact “means” anything. Kinda cool that Michelle Obama tops the list. I think of her as about personal dignity in general.

Just thought I would share.

Beyonce? Whiskey Tango Foxtrot?!

umm—this was a Feminism survey?
From the results, it looks to me it was a poll asking “name a woman you have seen a lot on television recently”.
But hey, it’s NPR.
As long as there’s a woman or a minority involved –
it’s an important news story.

Alpha, Beyonce, Charlie, Delta. They have to use words recognizable by speakers of all languages.

Not sure what to do with that. I just thought it was interesting. From the article, which is now up at that link to read or listen to:

[QUOTE=NPR]
The public opinion research firm PerryUndem asked about 1,300 people of different ages, races and genders who they thought the country’s most prominent feminists were.

Probably because of this proud declaration of feminism at the VMAs in 2014.

If you’re a Beyonce fan, you probably remember that. (I, on the other hand, had to use Google to remember why I associated her with feminism at all.)

I personally would probably have put Emma Watson on that list instead. She’s been in the news again with people trying to discredit her feminism.

Where’s Elizabeth Warren on that list?

The only interesting thing to come from this is that “feminist” is now a synonym for “famous”, I never knew that.

The clickbaitosphere has so many listings of top feminists, I am amazed that nobody could find one in which all four of the top four are women of color. Or any other characteristic you want to select for;.
