Numbness from Imipramine

I fly a lot lately and used to have anxiety problems (BIG problems). My doctor gave me Paxil. This worked great at completely stopping them.

Right now I’m between jobs and don’t want to shell out $155.00 for a 30 day supply of Paxil.(no insurance) So I asked my doctor if I could try Imipramine. (BTW it’s $15.00 for 30 days) anyway…It works almost as good but has more minor side effects (Paxil had no side effects with me)

Question—FINALLY—>
I can’t swallow pills so I chew them. When I chew the Imipramine it numbs my tongue and my gums. What causes this? It is EXACTLY like the feeling if you put Oraljel on your gums or tongue. It doesn’t last more than 1/2 hour either.

It’s nothing big, I was just wondering what in it causes a numbing reaction.

It’s a property of the substance. http://www.inchem.org/documents/pims/pharm/imiprami.htm#SectionTitle:3.3%20Physical%20properties

From experience I can tell you that leaving a tablet of amitryptiline on your tongue for, say, 30 seconds will also cause localized numbness which goes away after a minute or less. It’s mentioned in the very long technical inclusion that you can get from the drugstore.

Did your doctor say it was okay to chew the tablets? Half an hour of numbness doesn’t sound good.

Yeah I checked you can chew it. It isn’t great but I can’t swallow pills so I am used to it. I chew everything up. I tell my doctor don’t give me time release or anything that can’t be chewed and then I double check with the Pharmacist.

It’s nothing horrible I was just curious as why it felt EXACTLY like when you put Orajel on your gum when you have a toothache.
