Nutrition: Acid neutralizer

Since I eat a diet high in complex carbs (grains, oats) and fruits which are acidic (OJ, apples, grape juice, V8, juiced carrots/celery), would I benefit from taking a teaspoon or so of Baking Soda ever day or so? Or anything else to neutralize the mass amount of acid that might be out of proportion in my system?

Not really. Your lungs and kidney are very good at compensating for the amount of acid in your system already.

Most people have a blood pH around 7.4, with much of the acid coming from carbon dioxide produced as a waste product after the tissues have been oxygenated, and most of the base coming from bicarbonate ions. Lungs blow off the CO2 and the kidney adjusts how much bicarbonate it needs and how much it can piss away.

TUMS really are a good source of calcium, and this may be of very modest benefit if you don’t have enough of this in your diet.

But the amount of acid from your diet is modest in comparison to other sources of acid, and if you are not having heartburn, adding baking soda would do little.
