My wife is going to visit her mom for Turkey day. We just moved, and I’m on leave for the week. So as a treat for myself I picked up Neverwinter Nights II: Storm of Zehir and Sins of a Solar Empire to entertain myself while she’s gone. Our stuff hasn’t arrived yet but I installed NWNII and NWNII:Motb on my laptop before we flew from Germany.
Heres my problem though…the disk of Storm of Zehir won’t read when its in the drive. I took it back to the PX and exchanged it for another, but the new one does the same thing. Someone suggested that my DVD drive may have a problem with the copy protection on the disk, but that makes little sense. After several tries with the first disk I managed to get it to install. But after that when I try to play the disk doesn’t seem to read. The drive whirs and clicks but doesn’t read the disk and occassionally it just plan causes explorer to stop and lock up.
Its just that disk. Civ4, GalcivII, and SoaSE load and read fine. If anyone can suggest an idea that may help I’d appreciate it.
You may have been screwed over by copy protection, NWN2 has secuROM on it so it can do that. I’ve never had a problem, but I know plenty of people HAVE.
Some drives, specially older ones (but plenty of new ones) have problems with this type of disc checks and Securom.
You have a few options. Some less palatable than others.
Look for a no CD crack. This isn’t the best option, since you’d have to wait until one is released, and keep getting one every time a patch is released. And another patch is coming in a few weeks.
Try upgrading the firmware on your DVD drive.
Get a new DVD drive (burners can be had for $25)
Get a digital copy of NWN: SoZ.
I know it sucks to be prevented from playing the game you purchased due to some draconic anti-pirate measures. But that is the nature of the beast. I go digital now a day if only to avoid having to switch game discs every time I want to play a game.
