Well, considering this thread was started by somebody who couldn’t believe the NY Times gave the film a decent review, and made that the point of the OP, it’s odd that you’d think it was going to be a Sandler love-fest in the first place. But I guess I’m just of a different mind about such things; I enjoy arguing the merits of whatever TV show/movie/actor/musician is being discussed, even when nobody agrees with me. Helps me clarify my position or sometimes sways me to see it from the others’ POV. Not that there’s much reasoned debate going on in this thread, I grant you.
Ok, I caught a late show of the film last night and I thought it was hysterical.
Rob Schineder was’nt funny but everyone else, John Tutturro, Maria Carrey, the “Let’s get read to RUMBELLLLLL!” guy, George Takei, Kevin James, Kphn McEnroe and yes, Adam Sandler were really funny.
I’ve never seen an Adam Sandler movie.
I intend to keep it this way.
I saw Zohan last night. I knew it was going to be 9 kinds of stupid and I couldn’t wait to see it. This was so over-the-top on everything it was ridiculously funny. I laughed. A lot. I am going to buy this movie when it hits DVD. And if that was Adam Sandler’s real ass and not an ass stand-in, I want. He was hawt in this movie.
I might lose my SDMB membership for this, but:
I love Adam Sandler movies!
I saw it and it was very funny. I don’t like to throw out spoilers, so I’ll just say it’s very funny.
I am vindicated!
I saw Zohan today and was unimpressed. I love many of Adam Sandler’s other movies (Billy Madison, Happy Gilmore, Waterboy) but this one just didn’t do it for me. First of all I think it was just a bad premise for a movie. Israeli ex-commando goes to America and becomes a hairdresser…uh…okay? I thought the ethnic jokes were totally non-funny (and I think a lot of ethnic jokes can be funny, but not these ones.) OK, people in the Middle East like to eat hummus. I get it. You don’t need to knock me over the head with it nine million times. The whole sex thing with all the old women…eeeww…not funny, gross. And they threw in a redneck bad guy who complains about restrictions on the second amendment, for no reason other than to apparently jab at gun owners and smear them as racist rednecks (I can’t think of any other reason for that character to say that line - it wouldn’t have taken anything away from him if it was omitted.) The worst part of it for me, though, was that it attempted to touch on serious political issues - I don’t really like it when comedies try that.
I was pretty disappointed. There were a few funny moments (45 guys all pouring out of one taxi-cab, the fake brand names at the electronics store) but overall, I think this is one of Sandler’s worst.
