I’m moving to Brooklyn in a couple weeks and I need a recommendation for a good and reputable moving company. I need them to move some tables, book cases, TV, a couple computers, and approximately one billion boxes of books, CDs and movies. As well as some pricey camera gear and lenses that need to be treated with care. (I will be packing them in big boxes with tons of bubbles, but it still makes me anxious.)
Nevermind that, what’s the rent of the place you’re leaving??
NYC inside joke
Too late, I already sublet it!
grumble grumble
Sorry I don’t have suggestions… good luck!
I have liked North South Movers Inc.
When I moved from Manhattan to Jersey, I used:
All Star Moving and Storage
88 Sanford St. Brooklyn
718-643-4705
They sent a fellow out to look over my apartment and provide an estimate. They do an hour x price estimate for these short trips rather than a flat price for the job. You pay the actual time they use, and they capped it at 10% over the estimate to cover unforseen issues like moving during a transit strike :smack:.
When the job was done, they actually came in well under estimate, can’t complain about that! Also check out Moving Scam for some tips. That’s where I got All Star’s name.
For your camera gear, put big stickers on it labeling it fragile. They aren’t UPS or the postal service, they can actually take good care of things you label as fragile. Since you’re paying by the hour, it doesn’t hurt them to take more time for special handling.
Am I allowed to give an anti-recommendation?
U.S. Express Shipping and Storage. My stuff arrived three weeks late (cross country move, and the stuff took five weeks to get here!). My quote included free storage, which we would need because we were going to be on vacation when the stuff was finally coming. A vacation we had booked thinking, well there’s no WAY that our stuff will take five weeks to get there, when they quoted two! When I requested this free storage, I was told that there actually was no storage facility in California.
My computer was in multiple pieces because it had never actually been put in a box, which they were willing to compensate me twelve dollars for.
And to top it off they required 50% more money than the estimate they gave me.
Try arguing with these guys when they have all of your possessions hostage in a truck.
Thanks for the suggestions, Reepicheep and Cheesesteak. And anti-suggestions are welcome also, thanks Fiveyearlurker.
I used Big John’s Moving to move from the Upper East Side to Eastern Long Island. They did the whole thing full-service (packed up and unloaded).
No complaints whatsoever.
