In May, I will be moving from St. Louis, Missouri to Savannah, Georgia. This marks the first major move in my life, at least in the sense that I can’t just throw what I’ve got in my car or a small UHaul and go: I’ve got lots of furniture, some of it very heavy, in addition to all the other stuff that will go in boxes. I’ve heard about certain moving companies that will basically take all your stuff and move it, leaving to you the tasks of packing and unpacking.
So I’m looking for any recommendations or suggestions for moving companies, as well as where to get boxes for moving (I’ve heard certain companies only move boxes with their name on it). Any info will be helpful; for instance, I have no idea to estimate how much stuff I have, so I’m wondering how they will be able to quote an estimate for me, etc. Thanks…
I used Mayflower for my last major move, for what it’s worth.
Most major moving companies will allow you to do your own packing/unpacking (although they may not cover damages to items you packed yourself). They’ll sell you boxes, too, if you need them. The company typically sends a person out to look over your stuff to get an accurate estimate of how much everything weighs and what the price of the move will be.
I would recommend NOT using Allied movers. My employer used them when they moved us here. They did a poor job packing our belongings, resulting in breakage. They did not handle the furniture well, and damaged several pieces - including using packing tape on the outside of wood furniture, damaging the finish. Then they did not pay for all the damage they did, or admit they had lost anything.
On a prior move, we had pretty good results using Grabel.
