Well, one reason is that we know that Columbia admissions is fantastically racist, and Mamdani would have gotten a significant boost by lying about being Black. It wasn’t enough (he was rejected), which is possibly evidence that his grades were poor.

Fun fact: the hacker behind this particular smear, Jordan Lasker, is long known for pushing fake studies claiming that black people are genetically less intelligent. A paper he published in 2019 labelled “Global Ancestry and Cognitive Ability” so deliberately misrepresented the NIH data it used that it got Lasker’s (tenured professor) co-author Brian Pesta fired. Lasker wasn’t even a graduate student at the time. He continues to promote pseudo-scientific bullshit of a similar ilk.
