I seem to recall that Arab and North African neighborhoods in NYC had a magificently civilized type of establishment that would sell tea, snacks, and provide the use of water pipes (and sell charcoal and tobacco for their use). This always struck me as an extremely civilized and gentlemanly sort of idea. However, the NYC ordinance banning indoor smoking in “public” places would likely have put the kibosh on those.
Are these establishments still managing to stay in business, or have “crusaders” against smoking shut down a unique and wonderful ethnic custom in their midst?
I was in the East Village last Saturday. A couple of doors down from the Mercury Lounge (E. Houston and Essex) there’s an open door sidewalk cafe where the folks were tokin’ on the hookah.
For that matter, what about cigar bars? If the main reason for having the business is suddenly illegal, what happens to them? (Assuming that there were some in NYC)
