Anyone familiar with rank in the NYPD? Maybe it is similar in other departments, so feel free to jump in. This is a factual question…I am just using the TV show as an example.
On the TV show, NYPD Blue, Detective First Grade Sipowitz has been promoted to Sergeant, and has been assigned to patrol duties, in uniform.
He is not now a Detective anymore, but in the ranks. Wouldn’t this promotion not be a promotion at all? Although he is now a supervisor, he gave up his First Grade Detective shield to achieve that. Going from Third Grade Detective (entry level) to First Grade Detective is a rise in stature, along with the pay raises to go with it. Has he gone ‘down’ the ladder by becoming a Sergeant?
I understand that there are Detective Sargeants, but that’s not what I am refering to.
It’s a promotion and a higher pay grade.
I get the impression that Detective grades are pay grades and not ranks. I.e. the various grades of detective would rank with uniformed patrolmen and women and becoming a Segeant would be a promotion in rank.
I know in the show, when the detectives show up they give orders to the patrolmen and women but I assume that is because it is now the detectives case.
NYPD ranks, according to Wikipedia.
