If there are any dopers in TO, I was wondering if you would be willing to accept my eternal gratitude.
The story:
A few years ago, I was in TO with my (then) girlfriend.
We went into a really cool bar called The Court Jester and played a board game whilst waiting for our food. The game was called “King’s Court,” and we quickly became addicted to it–it’s like checkers from Hell.
Getting back to the States (or real America), we started looking for it, but could not find it anywhere.
The request:
Is there anyone who would be willing to go into the Court Jester and get me the specs for making a King’s Court board of my very own? Perhaps just a picture of the board at the beginning of the game would be enough.
(Haven’t been to Canada in awhile, but I’ve heard of this game)
Can you describe (as best as you can) what the board looked like? I’ve played “Nine Men’s Morris” and in one place heard it referred to as “King’s Court” (of course the speaker was slightly inebriated, but was usually a normally sane and reliable person). The gist being, if you can roughly descibe it, it may have a different name elsewhere.
…the board is square, with diagonally-cut spaces, alternating colours. There’s a border of squares in a slightly different shade, about 2 suqares deep. Each player starts on the border and moves as in checkers, on the same colour square. The opponent jumps like in checkers, but can go in any direction and over his/her own pieces like in Chinese Checkers.
The object of the game (IIRC) is to remove your opponent’s pieces from the centre area.
I played it three times about 7 years ago, so I probably don’t remember it all correctly.
Aaah, The Court Jester. The only bar I’ve ever seen with legal bathroom graffiti. I used to go there all the time, when a friend worked kitty-corner to it.
If you haven’t had help (or an offer from a Torontonian) by December 14th, e-mail me. I’ll be in TO that day.
