I came from the Kennedy generation when we thought we could make the whole world a better and more peaceful place to reside. That has all been changed. Now we are run by by selfish bankers and salesmen who have no problem killing anyone anyplace in the world that makes them uncomfortable or keeps them awake a little at night. What hope there was ,before we allowed our government to fall into the hands of selfish hustlers like Bush and Cheney. They turned it all over to financial pros who saw an opportunity to loot til their hearts content on a global scale. After it blew up in their faces, they turned once again to our country to recoup what was properly and fairly stolen in their ethical system. They own us . I suppose everybody in this discussion is aware that Social Security is not allowed to run at a deficit. In 30 years after the boomers are gone, the benefits would drop to 82 percent of todays levels. Social Security can not add to the deficit. It is impossible.
We stopped trying to build the world’s best fighter aircraft some time ago. The F-22 and F-35 programs were conceived in the 80s, and most of the contracts were signed in the 90s.
In any event, the Russians will have a fifth-generation (read: capable of taking on an F-22) fighter in about ten years, which means the Chinese might have one in twenty.
Are you saying that the F-22 isn’t the worlds best (and most expensive) fighter? What other fighter out today (not theoretically 10 years from now) matches it’s capabilities?
As for the long design and production lags, that’s pretty common today. After all, the air frame will probably be in service for decades (hell, some of our designs might be in service a century). The point is to make the plane upgradable and scalable, so that as new technologies come out they can be incorporated into the plane in the future.

No, I’m saying we’re taking a break from producing the world’s best fighter aircraft, now that the F-22 is finished. There are no replacements under development for the F-22 and F-35.
Moreover, the F-22 and F-35 platforms are vastly more versatile than the aircraft they replace (en toto, the F-16, F-15, F-18, F-117 and Harrier), and there’s only two of them, instead of five. Over time, they’ll actually be relatively cheap.
