Obama announcing death of Osama bin Laden [edited title]

I don’t think I would consider this an assassination. More like when a bank robber is killed when the police swarm in to arrest him.

Thank Buddha.

I’ve been sitting here feeling like a dolt for not know what the hell a horcrux is. I am relieved to find out it is only a Harry Potter thing and not something I actually need to pay attention to.

CNN.com is reporting that the SEALs had specific orders to kill and not capture OBL. And the Ford executive order did not delineate who could and couldn’t be killed; see the last paragraph here: Executive Order 11905 - Wikipedia. I guess you could argue that this wasn’t a “political” killing.

And see here: Executive Order 12333 - Wikipedia

Late last night the various news channels were showing a different, much more densely populated location that was literally across the road from the military college. The one that the CIA released images of is in a much more residential area, surrounded by fields.

Don’t be silly. No self-respecting necrophiliac would ever get it on with Osama Bin Laden.

That would be sick.

Homeland Security Advisor John Brennan said, “If we had the opportunity to take bin Laden alive, if he didn’t present any threat, the individuals involved were able and prepared to do that.”

That’s odd, I had no idea that Dr. Phil went there.

It seems a bit sloppy to not have phone lines or Internet access. Why not have lines that just aren’t used?

I wonder how much of the surrounding area our guys secured. Personally, if I built a compound in the middle of a residential neighborhood, I would want to build an escape tunnel that led to an ordinary-looking nearby house.

Check out this great picture of the situation room as the mission was being watching in real time.

It makes you feel a little safer.

nevermind.

Wow. The tension is palpable. Hilary in particular looks horrified.

The facial expressions are fascinating, especially Obama’s. The rest of the room has expressions of trepidation and anxiety - Hillary even has a hand over her mouth - and Obama is sitting there is an unobtrusive corner of the room watching with a remarkably stone-faced intensity. I don’t see trepidation or worry on his face, I see “kill that motherfucker.”

Amazing how unimpressive the real “situation room” looks. Hollywood set designers always produce something much cooler.

Apparently the official timeline has been released. The President was briefed on March 14th. On Friday April 29th, at 8:20 AM he authorized the operation then traveled to Alabama to view the tornado damage. The operation was originally scheduled for Saturday, but the weather was bad, pushing it to Sunday. Saturday, Obama attended the White House Correspondents Dinner. Sunday, 2 PM, a meeting to review the operation and the mission began at 3:30PM.

Apparently somebody slipped a printout of some Japanese tentacle porn on Hillary’s laptop keyboard.

I was thinking the same thing. I expected more technology, although we’re not seeing the wall opposite the door. And the room is smaller than typically shown in movies.

Shoot, he looks nervous as hell to me. Not that he shouldn’t be. This is a huge moment. Absolutely huge.

I guess it’s subjective, but I see a glare in his eyes, not nervousness.

Is anybody else thinking of the climax of the episode “Posse Comitatus” from The West Wing?

Where did you hear this?

I had heard it earlier today on MSNBC. It came up as part of the planning a long time ago, just in a contingency sense - “If we get him, what will we do with him” - and they checked with our allies and none of them wanted him.
