Hilarity, it is difficult to believe that you are unfamiliar with the historical racism and denigration inherent in associating black people with, and caricaturing them as, apes. However, even if this is the case, it has been explained to you a number of times in a number of ways by various posters in this thread. That you continue to assert an equivalence that doesn’t exist is disappointing.

As others have said, Marilyn Davenport is upset because she was caught. She was stupid enough to believe her email message would only be viewed by the like-minded, which I find amazing, and is just one indication that she knew full well the material was racist in nature and intent. That she attempted to hide behind her Christianity is no surprise, and smacks of the ignorance and desperation exhibited by those who presumptuously believe they are not subject to the same standards of comportment as those not in their circle.
What I also find amazing is that the compulsion some conservative adults have to distribute racist content via email is apparently as uncontrollable as a post-pubescent teen aged boy’s compulsion to masturbate.

Ah. I know there was an attempt to spin the target symbols as “surveyor’s marks,” but don’t recall her claiming the map itself was a “joke.”
(Which strike me as contradictory explanations, unless there’s a rich tradition of surveying humor I’m unaware of…)

Bush earned that (and more) through his behaviour and via caricature. It had nothing to do with race. The guy looks chimpish. If I were to caricature Obama, I’d go with a Frankenstein monster or maybe a Great Dane. Teabagger epithets are pretty clearly racially based. That’s the difference.

You might be right, but if that’s the case, then it’s not really fair to imply, as you did, that he was somehow excusing the racism just because the artwork was poor.
