A simple comparison of your tax return from this year and your tax return from next year may be useless, because your accountant may have recognized what a rube you are and piled on some extra charges. He could easily have inserted line 57A, “Cootie Insurance Tax” and you would have paid it without question. And when your corrected refund comes back to his office (because he altered your return to put his mailing address on it, managed simply enough by distracting you with a “Your shoelace is untied”), he intercepts it and replaces with a crayon-scrawled summation on the back of a Hooter’s place-mat, which he can be confident you will accept without question.

I don’t know any liberals who think this. I pay federal income taxes. I pay state income taxes. I pay property taxes on my house. I think it is my duty to pay back into the state for the services I receive. You think you should get a free ride. Your taxes (no matter what your actual income level) are actually lower now than they were under Reagan, yet you guys call Obama, who (unlike Reagan) has not raised taxes on anyone a “socialist.” Doesn’t it cause you any cognitive dissonance to call somebody a socialist, or even a “liberal” who is fiscally to the right of Ronald Reagan? If Obama is a liberal, then what was Reagan, who signed some of the largest tax hikes in US history (including the most massive corporate tax hike in history), ballooned the deficit and exploded the National Debt?
Conservative complaints about Obama’s perceived leftism would have more weight if they weren’t so bizarrely dissonant with their canonization of St. Ronnie.

What I think is interesting is that people with your beliefs will often say I’m selfish for not wanting to pay as much in taxes as they want me to pay. However, I think they have it backwards. It is selfish for someone to want the government to take my money to use for their purposes, whether it be giving it to themselves or to someone else. Wanting to retain something I own is not selfish, it’s just the default position.
Not paying in to the society that lets you earn that money is selfish.
But then, why do we even bother with this not-so-merry-go-round?
