Who are your police, native Afghans who’ve already been enlightened with western values, or 20 year old American high school graduates doing a tour in the army?
How many do you need per thousand Afghans?
Will you only need them for the 12 years it takes to get one batch of kids through school, or are we talking twenty or forty years here?
What if instead of rocks, your canny Afghanis build crude rifles at home, and use these to shoot at your police? What if some of the shooters are students, will they be expelled, or will you set up special prison schools for such incorrigibles? If they’re indeed incorrigible, what will you do with them?
Who’s consent?
I seem to remember that when we first got to Afghanistan and removed the Taliban from power that women removed their head coverings. Now they are back. Why is that? Did they see the errors of their ways based upon what god told them, were they convinced through sound argument and reasoning that it was better for them to wear them, or is it more likely that they were afraid of being targeted by others who wished to inflict head dress upon them?
If you asked the typical North Korean if he wanted to get rid of Kim what would his answer be? Especially if he was standing in front of the NK police. How are oppressed people going to get their message to you to help them? The choice of people in this thread is to ignore them, in any case. It is their choice to live in a dictatorship or theocracy, isn’t it?
Regardless, we are already in Afghanistan and Iraq. We’ve already blown tons of shit and people up. Now we should cut and run because a small minority want to fight with us when with the proper backing and resources we could fix the situation.
And what you call “fixing the situation” in this case would consist of killing most of the population and kidnapping the surviving children for indoctrination. The younger children, because the older ones would know what we are and what we have done.
But we’d be doing for their own good, and we could even set aside a special place for the people left over. Someplace reserved for them, say.
I like your ‘enlightened with western values’ comment. You obviously believe that allowing gays to marry is equivalent to female circumcision as a cultural norm. Or that going to a proper school to learn the 3 ‘R’'s is the same as learning the Koran by rote. What type of job do you get by memorizing the Koran, btw? The only one I can think of is that of suicide bomber.
Apparently, some people want to see their daughter’s educated for some unknown reason. I wonder why others want to stop them? Nothing to do with us, though, right? So. lets just leave these girls to their fate.
Yes, it would be ever so much better if we had dropped napalm on that school instead, right? After all, we’d be doing it for their own good.
I know you are masturbating feverishly in your basement hoping to hear such news, but we didn’t. The school is one of many that has opened since the Taliban were removed (I’m inferring that from the link below). Damn we are evil for doing such things to these people! Nevermind, as I’m sure these girls will be happy once the Taliban take over again. They have a right to their culture which doesn’t allow women freedom or education, nor should we do anything to help the 50% of people affected by that culture. They’re only women and their word is only as good as half a man’s, so really, only 25% of the population has any sort of beef.
I think I read about this one in the Bible… let’s see… Jesus runs into a crowd that just stoned an adultress. He takes a sec to write in the sand… everyone is baffled, but the alien spaceships circling the planet copy the orders to bomb planet x, killing a million innocent civilians.
The universe is therefore balanced in a way that you cannot even imagine.
That’s pretty much it, right?
Thanks, how about coming up with some answers as to how you plan to implement your school system? You’re glossing over some very serious practical problems.
I think you missed my last couple of posts on the schools that were gassed. It seems locals are trying to setup schools to educate their people. Now if we can only keep the ‘savages’ away to let them do so, I’d consider it a good start.
Uzi, I’d appreciate at least an acknowledgement that you read my post #494, even if you choose not to address it.
It’s all about you, ain’t it, Cupcake?![]()
I certainly understand the danger involved which is why I’d like to see an international group of countries working on this rather than one particular country. Hopefully, the more involved the less chance of things getting derailed into Der Trihs genocide scenario. Being able to say a particular cultural artifact is unacceptable to the world is far better than saying it pisses me off personally.
Which leads me back to the original sidetrack. The world doesn’t care about peace, it only cares about not having to read or watch it on the news. It could care less about some girl in Afghanistan having to lead a life essentially as a breeder. If it did it would do something about it.
Yours is not the only option. And I find it hard to square your recruitment prospects against your misanthropic views about people. Whose children were you planning on making into soldiers for this excellent adventure?
“Hey, you, useless sack of shit! Yeah, you! Take this weapon and follow me, we’re going to go shoot some men we don’t know so that kids that aren’t ours can have laptops and earn MBA’s!..”
Maybe I’d go, if it was the only way to keep your grubby mitts off my kids.
Look, if the Cubans are attacking Key West, or the Canadians are swarming over the border for our women, that’s one thing, that’s necessary, that’s gotta do what you gotta do. But I’m not sending anybody off to kill somebody else so that we can do social work.
Like kill her along with her friends and family instead, the way your crusade would. Not everyone in the world confuses mass slaughter with benevolence.
So, what are the other options that are working?
Who do you think I hate (even if I hate them. I just want them to stop) here other than those who are using their culture and religion to deny basic rights to people?
Afghani Police Force
80,000 people. They have problems with corruption. More oversight and support by the international community could help curtail this, imo.
Afghan National Army
Currently at 100,000+. Obama wants it to increase to 260,000 and he’ll pay for it to happen. I’d make the money, and any money, conditional on supporting basic human rights and secular education.
My wife’s an American. She capitulated willingly and I saw no one, including you, stopping me from stealing her.![]()
Attacks on schools are one reason your suggestion won’t work.
To prevent stuff like that, you’ll need a million or more occupiers.
You’d still have leaks, and a lot of your schools would end up burnt, and a lot of your teachers would end up dead.
The cost of keeping the ‘savages’ away would prohibitive.
Bribery.
It needen’t be all about idiology. For most people, their world view is much closer to home.
A pretty good argument can be made that the ‘Fall of the Soviet Union’ ™ was caused, at least in part, by modern communications, not by Reagan’s policies. By this I mean that the USSR underwent an internal revolution (and a bankruptcy, admittedly) when a solid majority of the population learned that the rest of the world had easy access to consumer goods. Things like transistor radios, cheap cars, and underwear made from soft cotton.
So we might just bomb your “targeted populations” with Victoria’s Secret catalogs and old copies of Boy’s Life and Popular Mechanics. And pass out free cash so they can buy stuff. Get them actually operating in a westernized economic system, without (whisper it now) actually telling them that’s what they’re doing. Once they get hooked on daytime soap operas and McNuggets, just like us, there won’t be any going back.
I think I suggested that earlier. Only the world could do it, yadda, yadda. Only it had the resources, yadda, yadda. It is good that you are agreeing with me that if we put enough troops on the ground we could get results, though.
Got it. Not worth the effort. Human rights are only for those who can afford them. Excellent.
Speaking of rights, Finland declared that Broadband Internet access is a legal right.
Just thought I’d throw that in there as an interesting fact when we think about girls (and boys) not being able to get basic education because we think it would be cost prohibitive to help them get it. The Finns are in Afghanistan with 100 troops of a possible 34,000 they have available
I’ve had discussions with Yemenis on this very point. It seems that the younger generations are starting to question their political leaders as to why they are so poor and the politicians drive Mercedes. The politicians blaming Israel and the US for their ills is starting to get old. See events in Iran for an example.
Driving through Yemen and seeing a satellite dish on a rough hewn rock hut warms my heart. I’ve yet to figure out how they power the damn things as I see no electric cables running to it.
Exactly.
If only people would just listen to me, all the time. I could make the world a better place. Really, I could! ![]()
Wet cell batteries, and a crank generator, maybe fixed to a bicycle peddle and chain arrangement.
Beggaring one’s nation in pursuit of impossible dreams is the province of fools, or possibly legendary spaniards.
Resources are limited, we must work within them, only fanatics suggest otherwise. Are you suggesting otherwise? It sure sounds like it from where I sit.
