Object that defies traditional destruction, What would you try?

Give it to a short person and tell him to throw it into the Cracks of Doom.

Why not just give it to an Eagle?

All this and no one mentioned a Sawzall? Beyond that, I’m not really sure. Actually, I live about a mile from the world’s largest Counterblow Hammer…

The Counterblow Hammer I live near (That’s not it in the youtube link, that’s just an example) is 5 stories tall and each ram weights 375,000 pounds. It has a “normal operating energy of 150,000mkg” Which I assume is megakilograms, which I assume is 150,000,000kg, which would be about 331 million pounds of smashing force. Looking it up on google maps, it’s actually about 2 miles from my house and I can literally hear it running right now…smash smash smash…that’s where I’d start.

…and then perhaps, OP hypothetically, finds this object…at the bottom of a cliff. :dubious:

Typical civilians have explosives? I need to find some more storage space.

Start with thermite. Put the object on a concrete pedestal and cover with thermite. Place a bucket of cold water next to the pedestal. Ignite and wait for the burn to complete. If the object is unharmed, knock off the pedestal into the water. There may be an explosion. After your skin grafts have taken, check the condition of the object if your eyes still work.

If the object is still intact try point pressure. You need a large hydraulic ram and a cleft in a large chunk of basalt. Place the object and hydaulic ram in the cleft so that as the ram is actuated it pushes the object against the one side of the opening in the basalt. Crank the ram up to maximum pressue. If the seals pop, or ram bends or the basalt breaks, you’re going to need some fissionable material. Try Japan.

if the object is tougher than the train tracks, would the train derail or would the object be kicked out of the way? hijinks could ensue during their quest to destroy the ring!

If you can’t penetrate it via other means to plant the explosives inside the object, then an external charge will just move the object far away. What you need is a linear shaped charge to cut the object in half. Granted, the average civilian won’t have access to this stuff; you’d need a demolition license or something to be able to buy it.

What kind of explosives can I get without a license?

Need answer fast! :stuck_out_tongue:

These.

As we saw in Oklahoma City, a layman can get ANFO as well. But for trying to open something rather than blow it out of the way I would go for the chemicals and freezing methods - who knows what It would react to ? Sodium Metal ? Hydrogen Gas ?

As dangerous as consumer-grade fireworks are to life and limb, they generally do not contain high-order explosives, which is what you need for serious demolition. For that, you need an explosives license.

He filled me in, and it’s something they need to either find, steal or create themselves to try on this thing. Turns out it’s a piece of alien tech they need to destroy in order to stop the baddies (or something), but it’s turning out to be stronger than imagined. He tells me they’re not exactly civilians, per se, but officials in some capacity, but this thing is highly classified. Or something?

Anyway, thanks all! I’m sure this is more than enough for some creative ideas. I’ll let you know what method he decides to go with.

Cryogenic liquids (LOx, liquid nitrogen and so on) have a variety of uses and are remarkably inexpensive. Get yourself a mess of the stuff. Put the object in a couple of nested containers and give it a good soaking. This ought to increase its brittleness. Then use some high-brustulance explosive (C4 for example) to give it a nice big whack.

If the hypothetical point is to just damage it enough to make it useless, and I got a hold of an explosive like Semtex or something, I’d maybe try to set it deep in the ground, and create a wedge shaped charge.

Get an A-10 Warthog and hit it with the 30mm depleted uranium cannon.

A-1 Abrams tank, 120mm sabot round, and while you’re at it you may as well try the HE round as well.

It’s fun to imagine the screen writer working on this. I’m thinking he’d be hesitant to use liquid nitrogen (or similar) because of that technique being associated with Terminator II.

Another classic technique for breaking the unbreakable is having it destroy itself. This was seen in the Incredibles where the Sphere Robot punched itself out. If there was another small artifact made of the same substance as the Indestructible Breadbox, it could be used as a projectile.

Right now, the Inferno with Mirrors technique sounds like the most fun, because someone could pickup 20 magnifying mirrors at Target for a couple hundred bucks. That might have to be combined with another technique to turn the trick.

These guys can probably get into the National Ignition Facility in Livermore.

I would give it a big hug, because it takes love to get some things to open up.

My teenage ADHD son can have that baby opened and disassembled in 10 minutes flat. You would’t see it coming. You will suddenly realize that it has been disturbingly quiet in his vicinity and you would start to feel that maternal dread that comes from unexplained peace. When you check on him, he will not have his homework done, he will have his afterschool snack involving about $75 worth of groceries in one hand and will have its delicate inner parts in another. He will then look at you and say, “You have to meet with the vice principal or something”.

You think Im kidding don’t you?
