Define ‘obscure’ however you will- I’m going to go with “haven’t really seen it discussed anywhere”.
Elizabeth Haydon’s Symphony of Ages trilogy- Great epic fantasy series. It’s been a long time since I read it, so I’ll just link to the reveiws.
John C. Wright’s Orphans of Chaos trilogy- Think it’s impossibly to write an original story about about mysterious orphans with magical powers? Think again. Wright does the impossible, in this extremely intelligent series.
Garry Kilworth’s House of Tribes (funny, all my picks have ‘of’ in them)- A pretty decent anthropomorphic animal book. This one is about mice.
Does the main character detract from the story at all? The sample on Amazon (featuring the Brother and Gunthor) is good, but I’ve heard bad things about Rhapsody.
I think Kelly Link may have been mentioned briefly once or twice in the last year or so, but not enough. Therefore, I’ll plug Magic for Beginners, which is one of the best collections of short stories I have ever read. Everything’s very vivid and detailed and interesting, especially if you love fairy tales, zombies, magical realism, etc.
I’ve never met anyone else who’s heard of this author. He writes in a sort of magical realism, but he’s from Uganda. The story is of his childhood and youth, and it is fantastic.
