Odd place names

Isn’t there a place on the south coast of England called Plymouth Ho! with the exclamation mark as part of it’s proper name?
The exclamation mark always tickled me, even before I had ever heard the Americanism “ho”

No , the palce you are thinking of is Westward Hoe ! which is named aftyer a novel by Charles Kingsley. There is a Plymouth Hoe but is does not have the exclamation mark.

Thanks Rayne Man
I obviously focused far too much on the exclamation mark, rather than the bloody words!

Should have known you’d be clever, when you see what grows on trees in your town!

I grew up near King of Prussia, PA. Visitors thought that was a strange name.

Pennsylvania’s also got towns named Bird-in-Hand, Anita, Eighty-Six, Mars, Angels…

Uranus.

It’s actually Westward Ho! (no E on the end).

Well, there’s that surreal place… Gobbler’s Knob.

Truth Or Consequences, New Mexico.

Butt my favorite…North Mianus.

Well, Snake-Hips, your Virginia and Louisiana offerings reminded me of Esta Butchee, Mississippi, not far from Hot Coffee, Mississippi.

Thanks I stand corrected ,but it is surprising when checking on Google how many times it is spelt the wrong way. Sites I have found using the wrong spelling include a golf club and caravan park , both located near the town

So Ringo, what the possibility it was a panther that hollered one of the researched answers? I understand that a cougar scream sounds eerily similar to that of a woman.

Theres a place in Califorinia named zzyzx. The guy who founded it wanted a name that would be the very last one in the dictionary. Its now also called Soda Springs.

Someone once told me a place name in Wales that is very, very long and filled with strange Welsh prononciations, so that when you say it it doesn’t sound long at all. Sadly, I can’t remember what it is - but this is the right place to ask !

Is there still a Joe, Montana ?

This link should answer your question and also includes some even longer names :-

My little sister got married in Toadsuck, AR. They renamed the town to Conway, but there’s still a Toadsuck Park in town.

Knob Lick, Missouri.

Zip: 63651

Well, Ireland and New York are both filled with places that have “Kill” in their names. For completely different reasons, of course.

In Gaelic, “Cille” means “church,” so wherever you see an Irish town that starts with “Kill,” it’s an indication that there is or was a church there.

In Dutch, “Kill” means a stream or a creek. Since the Dutch were the ones who colonized New York, they named all kinds of towns after the creeks and streams nearby.

Some people don’t understand that, which is why animal rights groups sometimes get angry about New York’s “Catskill Mountains” or the town of “Fishkill.”

I believe there is a town in Quebec called St.Louis de Ha!Ha!. I seriously wonder why anyone would name a town that, except to get on lists like this.

I grew up in Coolville Ohio…Very cool place

Cut and Shoot, Texas is just up the road from here.

Might as well mention Truth or Consequences, New Mexico, since no one else has yet. Even had a movie named after it.

I grew up near Frog Jump, Friendship, and Skullbone, Tennessee.
