Odd search situation

Well, I thought it was a fluke because after a day the search thing went back to normal. But now it’s flummoxed again.

Anyone else have this happen to them? When I go to the user cp and click on statistics and then find all posts, I get a maximum of five pages of results. When I do a manual search for all posts by a poster, I still just get a maximum of five pages. It’s five pages if I select display results as threads or display results as posts.

What gives?

There is a search limit; when the system shows you results you are shown the first 500 items it has on the subject.

100 items per page with a limit of 500 = 5 pages.

That’s odd. I really don’t recall that happening before. So, the brief time where I got a ton of results was the fluke and this situation is the norm?

500 is not sufficient for your needs?

Didn’t it use to be 750 results? ISTM that this changed recently.

Shodan

Yes, it did. I used to get 30 pages, at 25 results per page. Now i get 5 pages at 100 results per page.

I don’t think it’s a big honking deal, but a change like this must have required an active decision, and some tinkering with the software. It would have been nice to be told it was going to happen.

What an odd response to Monty’s simple non threatening question. What purpose does it serve to be so defensive?
If having more is too taxing for the servers, that’s fine. Just say so. No need to answer questions with questions.
In answer to your question. If I wanted to find a user’s first post and they have more than 500 posts 500 would most certainly not be sufficient for my needs.

If you wanted to do that, you would just toggle Ascending/Descending results.

Nice! Thanks. I didn’t know you could do that. I always use google to search the SDMB.

Sometimes it’s sufficient, sometimes it’s not. I guess it’s really not that big a deal. Also, I didn’t find Tubadiva’s question out of line.
