Oddball sensory pleasures

Today, someone is using a small drill in the office, it sounds a bit like a dentist’s drill. I haven’t bothered to look around to see what they are doing, I’m finding the sound very relaxing. I also like the drone of a vacuum cleaner.

The sound of heavy rain on a roof is another good one, but I don’t think that counts as oddball.

A few of mine:

The smell of vintage electronic equipment. I’m in the process of restoring a 50 year old Hammond organ. It’s what I expect heaven smells like.

Walking along a quiet railroad track in summer with the odor of creosote in the air and the sounds of insects buzzing around.

Standing close to idling diesel locomotives. The low frequency sounds are like an all over body massage. Then there’s the short blasts of compressed air being released so you don’t get too comfortable.

I used to like the smells you would experience (minus the stale urine) while waiting for a train on the original north-south line of the Toronto subway. The NYC system is not dissimilar.

When a woman is quietly rummaging through her handbag, the muffled sounds of the contents combined with the faint aroma of mentholated ciggies and I just want to linger forever in that moment.

The solid slightly stinging feel of a well placed softball in the glove - love it, throw it harder!

The dental hygeinist pick, when she hits the sweet/sore spot waaaay in the back behind the wisdom teeth it’s nearly ecstasy.
