I (barely) remember a bit of doggerel from my youth bearing the title “Ode to the Screw”, a bit of rhyme listing and praising the properties of that simple and indispensable machine.
.
I’d like to read it again, as all that I can remember of it is the title. Anyone out there know of it , or where to find it?
Ode To A Screw Driver
by Valorie King
The screw driver.
Pry open windows.
Disassemble furniture.
Remove tags from cars.
Weed the garden.
Take hinges off doors.
The screw driver.
Babysitter extraordinaire.
Never was there a toy that
Kept a two-year-old quite
So happily engaged
For hours on end.
The screw driver.
Simple, elegant, useful household tool.
Mayhem and mischief never had a better friend.
COuld it be from this book?
And why isn’t someone with your name looking for an “Ode to the Hammer?”
Nope… Thought this might come up, seeing what I got in a google search. I have this book (pretty good one, too). If it’s in a book, it might be The Mathematical Magpie, which I have also not seen from my youth, so I can’t be sure. I now see that it’s no longer out of print; have to grab that one now on general principles.
I see from Google that there is an “Ode to the Hammer”, but it should have been “Gavel” instead. Ah, well…
And now that I can look at the index at Amazon, I see that book has “The Song of the Screw”.
Thanks for the replies. I should have thought of that first.
