Of Catheads and Beat-the-Clock pants

When I was a kid in the 70’s, making fun of other people’s clothes was considered standard behavior.

ANY tennis shoes (or sneakers) that weren’t a name brand (at that time the only name brands we knew about were Converse and Keds) were called Catheads (I have no idea why).

Any pants that were a loud plaid pattern (and I had a pair) were called Beat-the-Clock pants. When the game show Beat the Clock was on in the 70s, all the contestants wore these hideously patterned pants.

Does this sound familiar to anyone else?

In the ‘70s, kids inspected each other’s pants cuffs with the same zeal that principals measured girls’ skirts in the '60s. If your pants didn’t at least “break” over your shoes, you were “highwater” and in need of aggressive ridicule.
