Of Dogs and Dog-Lovers

I am a dog lover, and I am aware of the fact that I am constantly thinking of my dog in human terms-I guess this is called “anthropomorphisizing”. I know that my dog is an animal, and he is driven by instincts that go back millions of years, as a wild animal. Yet, I constantly attribute all manner of human traits to him-why? For example, I think of him as “loyal” (which he is), but, his loyalty is to his pack, which I am the head of. He is protective-byut is this a genuine emotion on his part, or is he blindly following instinct?
I guess I’ve blurred the line between human and animal…but does anyone think that dogs are capable ofhuman-style emotions? When I return home from a hard day at the office,my dog greets me with barks and wagging tail-it is hard to think of him as a wolf showing submission to his pack leader!

If Isaac, our yellow lab who fell in love with me at first sight, isn’t as absolutely thrilled to see me when I’ve been gone for more than about five seconds, I’ll eat my hat. Sure, he knows I’m in charge. EVERYBODY is in charge to Isaac, because he’s at the bottom of the family hierarchy. But he also, from all evidence, worships the ground I walk on.

They like us. I refuse to think otherwise.

Add in “as he acts” in there. Aaagh.
