SO and I leave for St. Martin on Thursday for 5 days of sun, fun, more sun, and a little more sun after that. I’ll think of you all as I lay on the beach or in my hammock.
We’re staying at Club Orient, which is a clothing optional resort. Sorry, but I won’t be able to send post cards as I’ll have no pockets in which to keep a pen or stamps.
Lots of tropical flowers, lots of beautiful blue sky, lots of turqouise water, lots of naked people all of whom were as nice as can be (it is hard to be pretentious when you’ve got no clothes on - not surprisingly, a few people still try). Lots of very expensive stuff (I believe my credit card developed a cramp)
A wonderful time was had by all (or at least the two of us that went). I got plenty of hammock time, a surprise party at the bar for my birthday (about 50 naked people of every nationality trying to sing “Happy Birthday” after too much to drink - I believe I’ve seen everything now), and spectacular sunrises and sunsets.
Sorry, Geobabe, but photography is discouraged (and I couldn’t post them here anyway - there are naughty bits showing in nearly all of them that I did manage to take).
Send me your email address and a signed, notarized statement from your boyfriend that you are permitted to view such material. You’ll need a microscope to see the good parts.
I hearby, forthwith, hitherto, and serendipitously authorize nekkid pictures to be conveyed either electronically, through the US Postal Service, UPS, FedEx, or the flippin’ Pony Express from any source, of this earth or otherwise, to the aforementioned Geobabe mentioned before, or a duly designated designee, at any time, morning, noon, afternoon, mid-morning, evening, kinda-sorta-late-morning-but-is-this-breakfast-or-lunch, or night. But NEVER at dusk. Never at dusk.
Signed, stamped sealed, and authorized by me, myself, as dutifully executing the authority vested in me by the state of nudity.
Hey plnnr, can you give some advice on things to see, places to go, food to eat?
Hubby and I are going to be there next month. We’re not staying on Orient Beach (Baie Longue? at La Samanna.) but I imagine we’ll be there nearly every day taking in the “scenery”.
I’ve been to St. Martin, and, while I can’t say for certain that my experience was typical, I will say this: the island is beautiful, the beaches are wondrful, and as long as you’re content to enjoy them and make your own fun, it’s great.
However, if you EVER need anyting resembling friendly customer service, you’re out of luck. How bad is it? Well, in a St. Martin restaurant, you should HOPE for a French waiter! Because most of the locals are not only lazy but flat-out surly. In fact, if you EVER see a black islander smiling at you, RUN!!! The smile can mean only ONE thing: he wants to sell you a time share!
Look, don’t get me wrong, I don’t doubt that we American tourists can be a pain in the butt. And I can understand if locals resent having to work in jobs where they have to kowtow to seemingly rich, white Yanks. But heck, as long as the Yanks are there, looking to spend money, couldn’t they put on an act?
Couldn’t they smile in my face, then give me the finger behind my back, like in MOST countries that rely on the tourist biz?
I was in St. Maarten just last week, stayed (in a time share) at Port de Plaisance. Was damn hot and humid. But I got a tan without burning, which is something of a novelty for me, and I had a great time snorkeling near Creole Rock several times.
The person who hosted our trip normally goes in the winter months, when enjoying hot weather makes sense for those of us who live in the cold parts of the country…
I’d love to help you out, but we never left the property. They have an in-house grocery and we picked up things to eat there (because it was so hot our appetites were down anyway - we both just sort of picked and nibbled our way through four days).
Our routine: Wake up, eat a bagel and some smoked salmon, some fruit, drink some juice, go to beach and broil for a couple of hours. Go to chalet, shower, eat a light salad, take a short nap, get beer and water and go back to beach 'til dusk. Go back to chalet, shower, light dinner, bed by 8:00. Wake in the a.m. and do it all again. Pretty exciting stuff, eh?
St. Martin/St. Maarten does have some wonderful places to see - it is a pretty cosmopolitan place. Lots of boutiques and small specialty shops. For a little friendlier atmosphere you can go over to the Dutch side. You can also catch a ferry from Marigot and go over to Anguilla, which is one of my favorite places on earth.
As to the “scenery” at Orient Beach. You may be disappointed - I don’t know if you’ve ever been to a nude beach but don’t expect to see lots and lots of buff, beautiful people. They’re there, but you also have your typcial beach-goer (old, fat, young, thin, attractive, ugly) - they’re just naked and have all-over tans.
