Has anyone ever done this with the IRS? I have gotten behind in my taxes (bad move-I filed my taxes, but they never received them. Then when I got the scary notices that say "please disregard if you have already paid this bill. I disregarded them, as I assumed the check I sent made it.) and am considering the forms and hoops I have to jump through to do this. The forms are very long and they want me to document everything (not complaining…I just want to do this correctly and hopefully get approved)
Has anyone done this with success? Any advice would be appreciated. (unless you tell me I should have checked with the bank about the payment. The thousand plus dollars in fees and interest has made that very clear to me.)
IANAA but my mother is an IRS shift supervisor for phone in taxpayer Q&A. Sounds like you’re already getting the wheels in motion which usually will get them off your case for a bit while you sort out the paperwork. FWIW you can call the help lines and ask for help with any question and they will probably tell you what you need to know or can refer you. There is no “hidden agenda” or commissions for getting more money out of you. Remember, those people answering the phones are taxpayers too.
You best bet still might be a good accountant and or tax attourney. They will be expensive but it sounds like you’re facing a pretty tall stack of penalties and the potential gain may outweigh the cost. They know all the tricks and know what and who to ask for to get things handled promptly with the tax people. YMMV
I think calling the Q and A when I get stuck is a great idea.
I’m nervous about filling out these forms wrong. If I give them all this info I imagine I am going to make it easier for them to garnish my paycheck, or bank accounts and things. If I can call the phone guys (and moms) I think I will feel more secure about my anwers.
