Official 2011 NFL Football Thread - Preseason Edition

Well as everyone knows, it’s the millionth and one that you have to watch out for.

Congrats on signing another Eagles castoff today btw. Is that five or six in the past couple years? More? Dmitri Patterson is largely the reason the Eagles went out and acquired two Pro Bowl corners in the last week, but he got a bad rap. He was really good when he got his chance midway through last year. I don’t know if something changed or if other teams figured him out, but he was an abject disaster by the end of the season. I still kinda think he’ll turn into something decent down the road, but I’d much rather have our young guys than keep him around. Good luck.

And my 1000th post will be in honor of the Eagles picking up Ronnie Brown to a one year deal, which is being reported all over Twitter. I think he fits exactly what the team needed in a backup running back, and they did it the right way (not signing an injury prone guy at that position to a long term deal).

I just hope this doesn’t squeeze out the promising super athletic guys we drafted/signed out of college.

Saints have signed top draft pick Cameron Jordan to a 4-year deal. Also seeing some rumors of them considering a play for Osi (I can’t spell his lastname) the DE from the Giants…

ALL draft picks get 4-year deals, 1st-rounders include a team option for a fifth year. UDFAs get 3-year deals. This is all set in [del]stone[/del] the new CBA. No more stupid rookie tricks when it comes to money.

Excellent signing. Even if Brown never regains his earlier form, he can do everything you need from a running back. Plus, there’s always a chance his knee has finally fully healed, and he can return to his 2007 self - 1000 yards from scrimmage in 6 1/2 games.

Former 49ers NT Aubrayo Franklin wanted a long-term deal. So he signs a one-year deal with the Saints?

I imagine Dashon Goldson will be signing elsewhere, too. “GM” Trent Baalke said their priority for free-agency was to re-sign their own players. He’s either lying or incompetent, and probably both. Or maybe Jed York is implementing the Rachel Phelps-method of getting a new stadium.

This is so freaking depressing. I was all excited about football, only to see any hope of on-field competitiveness washed away like a dirty left sock.

Vikings cut left tackle/revolving door Bryant McKinnie. Former Colt Charlie Johnson will start at LT. I’m in agreement with most Vikings fans that this move will ultimately pay dividends, but comes a bit late. However, McKinnie himself seems to be intimating he’s planning on skipping this year for health reasons, and trying to come back next season.

My goodness, another remarkably active day. The fan base is getting absolutely spoiled right now, they’re starting to expect high caliber moves every single day. It’s crazy. Rumors are flying around about moves that are completely fucking ridiculous but gain traction anyway because completely fucking ridiculous is happening every single day. I don’t know about other teams, but I think a higher percentage of Eagles fans are brain dead morons than of other teams. I don’t know how to rest of you put up with these lackwits.

So, Ronnie Brown solves a marginal hole at backup RB behind LeSean McCoy. I didn’t see it as a major need because, while nobody is there right now save for rookies/UDFAs, Shady is a good receiver and above average blocker and can easily play three downs. But he’s smallish, so a good backup is a wise choice. You can’t beat Ronnie Brown on a major discount (1yr, 1mil). He’s a bigger back (though Shady was one of the league’s best in short yardage) and a good receiver, but also an outstanding blocker. Perfect insurance policy. Perfect fit.

Then they shored up the biggest remaining need at RT with Ryan Harris from Denver. I don’t know too much about him, but I know he was held in very high regard in Denver before injuries getting the best of him in the last two seasons. This excites me, as he’s really young and really good (or is when healthy) and could be the future bookend the Eagles are looking for. He’s also a perfect Howard Mudd guy and I have really high hopes for him. But it’s also a bit of a placebo. The Eagles were weak at RT because their normal starter, Winston Justice, is above average at best and battling injuries. Now they add someone who has battled injuries and has been above average at best lately? What do they gain?

The biggest potential gain I see is being able to move or cut Justice and saving another two million off this year’s cap. That’s another four Pro Bowlers at the current Eagles Discount.

This is the strangest sports period I’ve ever experienced. I’ve never been part of an arms race like this as a fan. I follow the DBacks, who routinely sell, sell, sell and never do anything interesting anymore. I’m a Blazers fan, who, while always active, never make big splashes. And the Eagles, up to this year, have always been very cautious and prudent in making deals (with a few scattered exceptions), to the point that the front office had been widely labeled as cheap and timid. It’s almost too much. Like, how is this sustainable?

And as an Eagles fan, I’m used to high hopes, good results, and crushing defeat, The team has never won a Super Bowl. And this team is still coached by Andy Reid and a defensive coordinator, who while universally respected, is a converted offensive line coach. It’s the natural “Iggles Inclination” that I’m already trying to mentally prepare myself for this team’s inevitable, crushing, soul shattering, playoff loss. It’s tempering all the fucking fun I’m having reading all the team blogs league-wide and their constant shock and dismay by the Clinic being put on for all to see.

There’s room for you on the Philly bandwagon, but you have to act fast. I have a feeling Eagles hats are selling rather quickly all of a sudden.

I read he showed up to camp at 400 pounds. Mount McKinnie indeed. I doubt he’ll skip this year for health, it’s just going to take that long to work off all that weight.

I dunno. Philly has the brainless negativity, but other teams have similar kinds of brainless. Read the comment thread in an Oakland newspaper; I guarantee you that right now there are multiple people saying how losing Zach Miller makes them a better team.

It’s not, for the most part. But they’re not really mortgaging the future. Young and Brown are likely one-year rentals, the OL were affordable and fairly young, and both Babin and Jenkins are easily cut loose if they don’t produce or if Graham and Laws make them superfluous. The only older guy they’re committed to is Asomaugh. Samuel is tradeable, and DRC can walk after 2012 if they don’t want to keep him.

My biggest medium-to-long term concern is Vick.

Screw that. I’m going to police the bandwagon. Anybody that can’t correctly identify Louie Giammona’s uncle, recall Keith Krepfle and Antone Davis, name three lousy Buddy Ryan tailbacks, explain what record Harold Carmichael held, and articulate why Rich Kotite was the worst coach in NFL history gets shoved off.

What’s interesting about the Eagles is that I cannot ever think of a team that did so much off-season maneuvering that was ultimately successful in the NFL. But then again there has been no other off season like this one.

I predict serious chemistry issues, but the one huge advantage the Eagles have is that everyone has missed OTAs, so everyone is behind on learning the playbook.

In other news, ESPN will unveil its own quarterback rating system on Friday. I’m strangely excited about this.

Looks like Eagles DT Mike Patterson collapsed at practice today and had a seizure…sounds like he’s okay though. I hope so.

Maybe the Bengals will pick up Brett Favre? :dubious:

I, uh, probably can’t answer but one of those. Might have to relax the standards a bit, being a genuine fan does not mean being over 40.

There has never been an offseason like this one, no, but the Eagles did sign Terrell Owens, Jevon Kearse, and Jeremiah Trotter before the 2004 season and went to the Super Bowl. No, they didn’t win, but it’s an example.

The difference between what the Eagles are doing, and say, what the Redskins have done, is that the Eagles have leaders in place. Reid is established and respected. Vick is worshipped by players. And the guys they’re bringing in are all high character guys who are leaders in their own right. Asomugha, for instance, commands respect from everyone. Where this fails is when the incoming guys try to run the show. Not going to happen in Philly.

Reid has a lot of work to do to get everyone up to speed (not only because of a shortened offseason, but because so many of his starters have missed so much training camp time so far due to being free agents that can’t practice). But he also has a lot of work to do to manage the egos. Going to be very interesting.

Unless Asante completely submarines the team, I don’t see much trouble with chemistry. I trust Reid and Co. in their ability to manage egos. They certainly learned what not to do in 2005 with T.O.. Maybe if they were bringing in guys like Haynesworth and Ochocinco, etc., but I can’t imagine Asomugha and Cullen Jenkins are going to rock the boat.

It’s interesting. I’m glad we may finally move away from QB rating, which is awful. ESPN had an article here teasing it where they listed the “tiers” of QBs according to Total QBR (the new stat) in 2010.

So being a dumbass fatso is a “health reason” now?

It is when you are 400 lbs. That’s a big boy even for a lineman.

Vickers is signed by Houston. Last year’s best rusher in the league just got the league’s best fullback, so watch out.

Houston actually LOST the best fullback in Vontae Leach. Vickers may be very good, but he’s still a step down from Leach.
