Official 2011 NFL Football Thread - Preseason Edition

I just want to say that this thread isn’t the same without Dio blabbering on about the Vikings (and trash-talking the Packers).

People forget that Reid wasn’t going to trade Kolb. Not even a year ago Kolb was the starter of the future for Philly. Then Vick happened, which was unexpected. It isn’t that Reid is trading Kolb because he isn’t high on him, it’s that Reid is trading Kolb because he’s much higher on Vick. Big difference.

Albert Haynesworth to New England. I love it. Let that cancer kill the Patriots. Let the hate flow, Albert.

Appearently, that my be truer than you think. I understand he “knows a guy” who can get tickets!

And the Kolb deal isdone. Kolb to Arizona for Dominique Rodgers-Cromartie and a 2nd round pick. I guess the hold up was Kolb agreeing to a new contract which is being reported as 5 years $63million and $20 mil guaranteed.

Wow … that’s a lot. Go big or go home, I guess.

Someone on Twitter (forgot who) mentioned that it’s very close to what Aaron Rodgers got for his deal in 2008 and that both Rodgers and Kolb had the same number of starts when extended.

I love Kolb, and I think he has a ton of upside. But if the Cardinals are expecting Aaron Rodgers, well, that’s optimistic.

Waitresses all over New England are buttoning their blouses to the top as we speak.

The “experts” all think that Bill Belichick can straighten him out. Unless they’re switching back to the 4-3 just for Fat Al, I’d imagine Bill is going to find out he bit off way more than he can chew (as in, about 350 lbs). We’ll find out, I guess.

Just for fun, I went back to compare those starts against each other.

Rodgers: 4W 3L 145/221 65.6% 1668 yds (238/gm) 12TD 4INT
Kolb: 3W 4L 148/239 61.9% 1714 yds (244/gm) 10TD 9INT

Rodgers clearly better of course, but there are two interesting things in there. Of those seven starts, Kolb threw ten passes in one (the GB game where he got knocked out in the first quarter and paved the way for Vick) and was playing with his second string offense in another (week 17 against Dallas when Philly rested their starters and Dallas didn’t). Take those two games out and his numbers look much, much better.

Kolb (5 starts) 3W 2L 125/193 64.7% 1528 yds (305 yds/gm) 9TD 6INT

That’s what the Cardinals paid for, the starts Kolb made where he was actually playing with his first team. People talk a lot about what Kolb has done without adding in the context. In his starts, he’s been very, very good.

One take on that issue:

There’s no denying the Pats have made this kind of thing work before.

Pats get Haynesworth for nearly nothing, right? And since his bonuses are all paid for Washington and I assume the contract is backloaded they get a few relatively cheap years out of him. It’s going to work well for them.

2008 Rodgers was way better than Kolb I think, by the way. Arizona probably overpaid a bit but not massively. I think Kolb is pretty overrated at this point in his career. He may turn out to be a good one, but people are way too confident in him so far.

Rodgers was and is way better, and will be too. If the Cardinals are expecting Rodgers, they’ll be disappointed. As for Kolb being overrated, I think he’s actually underrated now because so many people have been calling him overrated. I’ve read an awful lot about Kolb in the past year and it seems like people aren’t giving him a fair shot. It’s bizarre.

But going forward? I’m not sure how well he’ll do in Arizona, at least not this year. Very little time to practice and learn the new system and coaches. Arizona’s O-Line isn’t exactly stout, and outside of Fitzgerald, Kolb has far fewer weapons than he did in Philly. And if this season doesn’t go well and Fitzgerald bolts in 2012, well, Kolb may be stuck in an awful situation and never get a chance to really shine.

I don’t know what The “experts” think, but I think Bill Belichick is really good at not trying to “straighten out” people, but taking them as they are, using them if he can, and dropping them if he can’t.

Haynesworth’s not going to be a cancer any more than Moss was; if he starts to be one, he’ll be gone, and they’re only out a fifth-round pick. If he has 10% chance of playing up to his abilities, that’s a great trade. Terrific move for NE, damn them.

It is hard to compare contracts pre-agreement and post because the econmics are so different, so much less money is now going to be devoted to draft picks that teams will have some money to direct for more established people. That is one reason Kolb’s contract might seem a bit high, but in the new economic environment it might nor be so.

Chad Ochocinco takes his ongoing drama and reality show to…The Patriots! Yay Bengals…right move if we are rebuilding with young talent. I still dont know what we got…if Haynesworth was only had for a fifth rounder in 2013, I can’t imagine Chad was much more than that.

Story here: http://www.nfl.com/news/story/09000d5d8210dee7/article/ochocinco-dealt-from-bengals-to-pats-given-threeyear-contract?module=HP11_headline_stack

The Pats are pretty good at remaking talented players from other teams fit into their system…I question whether they can get Chad to shut the fuck up or not. I am guessing not.

Quoted for truth.

The Cards must address the O-line now. I note that they have signed Daryn Colledge at guard but they need more than that. If Kolb spends his time with the protection that the O-line put up last year, that guaranteed money will be a waste. I want them to try and find a decent tackle and that right soon. Don’t know enough about Colledge’s run blocking but I’d like to see them run the ball more and better than they have done recently, in order to take the pressure off Kolb and this will require a more coherent O-line. I don’t particularly want to see him throwing more than 25-28 times a game too often whilst he beds in with a new (for him) system.

Browns are a strong contender for Johnathan Joseph apparently, which I have to say would be really badass. Not sure if we’re keeping Wright but Haden/Brown/Joseph/Wright would be redonkulous. Better than anyone but possibly the Jets.

With the Eagles signing Babin, Ray Edwards is also looking more plausible. Can anyone tell me about him, because all I know is that he’s a solid player next to the Williams Wall and with what’s-his-douche on the other end, so I’m not sure if he’s actually any good.

You better not! He’s one of our best players. We’ll be fighting!

I’m confused… Carson Palmer has to “honor his contract,” but Chad Johnson doesn’t?
