The question is if the use of the term “official” is legally defensible if the NFL objects

Even “meta” sports questions live in the Game Room. Thread moved.
Well I hope our best legal minds are also sport enthusiasts.
IP is not my field, but if they got pissy about it, I might offer to edit the title to something like “Official SDMB 2011 NFL Thread - Preseason Exhibit”. This has the advantage of not appearing to have any sanction by the NFL, and eliminating an annoying redundancy in the original version of the title.
If they don’t like that, I’d edit the title to something like “Official SDMB 2011 Thread about the Pro Football league in the U.S. that’s run by a bunch of assholes”.
It’s not the 2011 NFL’s Official Football Thread. The “official” is not stating this is the only thread that the NFL has made official, it’s the “official” thread about NFL football on the SDMB. Or it is the “official” thread of Omni’s. There is no trademark, copyright or intellectual property violation here.
Case dismissed.
[Law & Order]Chung chung![/Law&Order]
Everything I do is both “Official” and copy-written. It’s one of the perks of being me. I’m suing the NFL now, but I’m not at liberty to discuss ongoing litigation.
Who cares if the NFL objects? We’re not holding out the thread as having been approved in form and content by the NFL.
