Here’s one that tell what all of Filmore’s bumperstickers say:

From the same blog, I’ll recommend “The Man Who Could Save Animation,” as well as “The Inside Track,” two articles that cover both the making of Cars and provide some insights into John Lasseter’s mind.

I’ve been a big fan of the Pixar movies. I’ve got all of them on DVD.

I’m not eagerly anticipating this one, and don’t have any definite plans to see it all. Maybe when it goes to the second run theatres.

Why? Well, call me a girly girl, but an animated movie about cars and car racing doesn’t do anything for me. It’s not because they are anthropomorphizing objects. Heck, I’m old enough to remember when the first Pixar short with the desk lamp came out. I loved it. I loved the one with the snow globes. But this movie? It’s about cars. And car racing. I feel overwhelmingly meh-ish about the whole thing. It may not actually be so, but from the previews I’ve seen the movie seems to be targeted far more to the XY chromosome set.

It’s not. As the movie’s tagline says, “Life’s a journey. Enjoy the ride.

It’s about slowing down and enjoying the things in life, not blowing past them at 200mph.

And advanced word says that it’s a tear-jerker that makes everything else Pixar has done before seem like lighthearted jocularity by comparison. I hope it’s not that depressing, myself, but I’m sure it’s got a lot more depth than just zoom-zoom-zoom.

I can’t see anything. What’s on the tires?

And will there be a Pizza Planet delivery truck with LGMs hanging from the rearview mirror?

LIGHTYEAR

“Buzzard” tires by the Lightyear Tire Company, to be exact.

Here’s my one and only concern with the picture-

A lot of the success of the past Pixar films is that they show off the unlimted possibilities of computer graphics by taking us to unique and very picturesque/colorful environments.

Toy Story I & II, the suburban/urban environment at the miniature scale. We see everything familiar to us but from a miniature perspective.

Bug’s Life, again the miniature persepctive but in a rural/nature setting.

Finding Nemo, the colorful vivid underwater world of oceans and coral reefs.

The Incredibles, a lush tropical green green island with cool grottos, caves, etc. with modern hi-tech badguy fortress.

Monster’s Inc, the weakest of the bunch and maybe for this reason. It took us to an unfamiliar place with some dull colors. Nothing too interesting in a warehouse/factory setting.

Which brings us to Cars. From the previews it looks like it’s mostly set in the desert (not a very exciting color pallete there) and at racetracks at a normal human scale. While the story is very important, the rest of the movie should still shout “EYE CANDY” especially coming from Pixar.

“We never go into these movies thinking, What haven’t we done? Ocean water? OK, let’s do that. That’s thinking from your technical side. We think from our story side.”
–Andrew Stanton, director, Finding Nemo (From “Welcome to Planet Pixar”)

And I don’t know what previews you’ve seen, but the Cars stuff I’ve seen include desert vistas that took my breath away, second only to the Grand Canyon…

Not familar with the Painted Desert?

Yeah that was one of the first things I was drawn to, the previews are never that appealing b/c they are all teasers…they give you littel to nothing besides the visual wonder of the film. Have you looked at the podcasts? They are prett fresh and they will give you more info on the animationa nd behind the scenes stuff.

Time magazine reviews Cars.

What makes this thread “official”? Is Disney in charge?

In one of the other Cars threads here on the 'Dope, i posted a message stating that i was waiting for “Larry the Cable Guy” to work a “Git 'er Done” into the movie somehow…

i was scoffed at

well, go to the Cars website and click on “Ads” and load up the NASCAR ad and watch it…

go on, i’ll wait…

alright!

::gets on knees::
::unzips::

I’m impressed that they’ve got Richard Petty himself playing “The King” as a Petty-blue #43 Plymouth Superbird.

And I think it’s funny that the lead character is named after Steve McQueen.

Actually, it’s a reference to Glenn McQueen, a Pixar animator who died in 2002.

LtCG’s catchphrase aside, i’m really looking forward to this one, i’m a gearhead myself, and i just love the detail that’s gone into this movie, i mean they sweated every little detail, even down to the piston firing order of each car and the exhaust note of the vehicles in question…

When Lightning’s driving through the desert in the opening, there’s tire tracks in the clouds, many of the cliffs are carved to look like hoods or tailfins, the V-8 Cafe’s roof over the pumps are a series of pistons holding up head gaskets and valve covers…

this one’s gonna’ be good

Not Disney, Fiat.
