Official CARS Thread

Gentleman start your engines, looks like the next installement of Pixar gold is upon us and I need place to get my fix…I want reviews, pictures, interviews, updates!!

As of right now…79 days before the big opening…I visited the official site recently and it was revamped and is incredible…

(i guess they are rolling out a new character every week…)

Also – new one-sheet up on AICN: http://www.aintitcool.com/display.cgi?id=22740. I like it!

Okay lets get rolling!!

So…

This isn’t about Coherent Anti-Stokes Raman Spectroscopy?
Bummer.

But that Disney/PIXAR film looks pretty good.

Granted, I’ve never once been disappointed by Pixar. But this one scares me.

Human characters (Incredibles) Easy to believe, and immerse yourself.
Toys (Toy Story 1&2) Easy enough.
Anthropomorphized insects (Bug’s Life) No problem.
Monsters (Monsters Inc) Cool with me.
Fish (Finding Nemo) A bit of a stretch to accept the premise, but it worked well enough in the end.

But cars? The trailer looks gorgeous, but I have trouble believing in talking cars. All the other movies are fairly easy to stick human characteristics onto the characters, since they are human, animal, or mostly human-like toys. These are cars. And from what I can gather of the story, it’s pretty simplistic “boy has success but no soul, boy meets girl, finds soul.”

Sure, I’ll give it a try, but I’m not going to be surprised if this goes down as Pixar’s weakest so far.

I’m just waiting for them to use the phrase “Man, she’s got some junk in the trunk”.

I hate that saying.

I had the identical reaction. Anthropomorphic cars just don’t do it for me.

Disney market specialist #1: “We need a way to connect with the conservative midwestern-type demographic. Our St. Louis market study showed that box office revenue for The Incredibles was 45% lower per capita than Boston. Just look at the chart!”

Disney market specialist #2: “We’ve been studying this demographic for a long time. There were some storyboards about a penguin that liked country music a while back, but it didn’t test well.”

Disney market specialist #1: “Penguins is foreign?”

Disney market specialist #2: “You betcha. 23% in Oklahoma City think they are French.”

Disney market specialist #1: “Jesus. What else do they like?”

Disney market specialist #2: “Well, Jesus, for starters. Let’s see: barbeque, NASCAR, the 2nd amendment…”

Disney market specialist #1: “I’ve got it! ‘GUNS’ We can have these little guns with faces, and do a the Pinocchio’s Soul with them…”

Disney market specialist #2: “You might be on to something, but just a suggestion: let’s work the NASCAR thing a little bit more.”

As mentioned in another CARS thread, Disney had done some shorts featuring anthromorphic cars back in the 60s & 70s. This is an extention of those previous works.

It’s by Pixar.

It’s by John Lasseter.

Anyone who thinks this movie is not going to be a satisfying, heartwarming, all-ages-enjoyable movie that does major box-office is in serious denial. You might as well ask Michael Jackson to stop being weird, it’d be easier.

And anyone who thinks you can’t anthropromorphize inanimate objects and give them as much emotional depth as “humans” (or human-like characters) has forgotten Pixar’s roots – the company started out by anthropromorphizing lamps and unicycles and pencils, after all.

Finally, since it wasn’t covered in the OP, the theater owners who saw Cars at the ShoWest trade show last week have proclaimed it to be a winnah.

Since the fourth (most recent trailer) was released - it seems to be right back on track. Think back to Nemo and The Incredibles - both trailers were less than stellar- and I have no complaints those.

Here’s the new poster just released:

I found this at Latino Review.

Love the Toy Story reference on the tires.

Didn’t even notice that they first time around, thanks! Everything that has come out for it so far has been so visually beautiful, I am sure I’m going to miss so many of those little things.

By the way- a new character was released today - Doc Hudson. Check out the show room on the official site.

The newest Japanese trailer is available here (requires Windows Media Player). Lots of new bits that haven’t appeared in any of the previous trailers to date.

So, in other words, this is not the official CARS thread.

Oh, you funny thing…but yes this is the official THREAD. If you are referring to the official SITE (as I was), then no…no it is not. Thanks for playing. :wally

Jokes- but for real have you checked out the site? It’s really impressive.

That is my favorite one so far. Why are foreign trailers so much stronger than domestic so often?

American trailers have to accomodate our audiences’ shorter attention spans.

Well played…sad but true!

Don’t know if you guys already saw this – but the interactive poster on the CARS website is pretty cool. We can scrutinize all the details – maybe there are other hidden treasures we’ve missed so far. Go under the "test drive games on the top in the show room…

Saw that the other day, but was disappointed I couldn’t get character specs for everyone on the poster (especially Elvis  ).

I first thought this movie was going to be a rip-off of the Chevron Cars .

Yeah, its killing me I’m sure there are more hidden things that I haven’t seen yet. I must say I sweat the assets that pixar always puts out in conjuncture with their films. here’s to many more!
