"Officially" Unattractive Actors/Models

And if you look closely you’ll see how little of it is latex and how much is Ron, with maybe some cotton in his cheeks. Ron Perlman was never destined to be a leading man, but he has done a terrific job with what he has AND he parlayed it into several seasons of being an actual leading man.

I really think Ron Perlman could do an Oscar-level performance if he was ever given a Mary-Shelly-faithful role as the Frankenstein monster.

Amen. And we should add the plumper ladies. Did anyone notice Camryn Manheim in “The Road to Wellville?” I know I did.

Wouldn’t that be GREAT?!?!? He’s a helluva actor and the story has never been done right.

And yet, despite his life and his looks, on “King of the Hill” he’s the hopelessly nice and middle-class Enrique.

Then she is failing miserably.

Counterpoint.

I remember David Sedaris talking about her trying to look bad in one of his books–how she’d put on a fat suit and act totally serious to fuck with their dad, who took pride in having beautiful daughters.

That’s in character, that doesn’t really count any more than you can say that Charlize Theron is ugly based on this.

Harvey Keitelhas never been much of a beauty

Well, okay, you’re the third one to object. Looks as though MMMV. For my part I find her unattractive to the point of a train wreck - I want to look away but can’t.

Woah, hey, let’s not get crazy. Fat is as unattractive to me as not shaving or not bathing.

Well is plump a “type” or not? I find them attractive as hell. Not fat women like you sensitively put it, just plump. There’s a difference.

Hmmm, we’re in danger of hijacking this thread. Can I close this tangent by pointing out that I said all types of attractive women? Many (most?) guys don’t find fat attractive, though some certainly do.

No we can’t close it with that. Fat is not equal to plump.

Based on THAT, Charlize Theron IS ugly.

If you go back into the 60’s and earlier, there wasn’t quite such a premium on beauty. Let’s see

Barbara Stanwick
Irene Ryan
Bette Davis
Humphrey Bogart

In “Lawrence of Arabia”, Anthony Quayle was cast as Colonel Brighton. Somewhere in the movie one of the Arabs tells Brighton he has a silly face. I’ve always wondered how Quayle felt about that particular casting.
Roddy

Which reminds me of a couple more famously ugly stars.

Anthony Quinn
Ernest Borgnine

Well, he did look very Frankenstein’s monsterish as Salvatore in Name of the Rose.

I actually like him, I have never had what I would call a great date with a model pretty man. I have had some of my best dates with ordinary looking or less than good looking guys. I want a guy that can hold his own in a conversation, is interested in hanging out and having fun. Most pretty boys I have dated were all about being seen in public and aweing people with their looks.

[Just like I wouldn’t date a sports fanatic, I don’t like sports and have no interest in discussing stats. There are female sports fans out there that they are a better match for. ]

It is part and parcel with not dating a guy hung like a horse … too many of them think that going at it like a battering ram will get all women off when we prefer a bit more finesse:)

MODERATOR INTERJECTS:
Please, folks, remember to keep links safe for viewing in the workplace (for those unaware, the abbrev “NSFW” means “Not Safe For the Workplace.”) For the Rules in full, please see FAQ: Rules for Posting at the Straight Dope Message Boards and specifically What links are permitted?

I’ve edited the ones that were reported to make them non-parsed. We’re not trying to stop anyone from looking who wants to see them; we’re trying to prevent anyone from clicking on them at work unawares, when a boss or coworker might be walking by.

I don’t have time to view all of the links in this thread, so I am asking y’all please to report any that should be edited. It’s not a “warnable” offense unless we find the same person doing it frequently, deliberately, despite being reminded not to, so there’s no repercussions for someone who posted an unsafe link. However, you reporting it might save some other poster a huge amount of grief.

For future posting: the tags [nonparse] and [/noparse] will kill a link, yet leave it visible so anyone who wants to go there deliberately can do so. Again, we’re not trying to prevent people from going there, we’re trying not to increase the unemployment rate.
