Oglaf appreciation thread - very NSFW - hilarious pornographic webcomic

There are many good and valid reasons to draw a guy with a dick in his mouth.

But not this.

Not . . . revenge.

Don’t go down that path. It leads only to ruin and pompous and poorly drawn indie comics.

Though I wouldn’t agree that Ivan’s pinecone-job was in any way equivalent to the Snow Queen’s coming out story. The buttmonkey of the latter was Frostbite Guy, not the SQ.

This post has so many potential sig lines.

  1. I agree that a strip where a straight guy is outright hypnotized or deluded into a gay encounter, as with Ivan’s pinecone-desire-fueled oral sex with Sandoval, is a different matter.

What I’m thinking of is a situation where an evidently straight guy ends up going for the homosex rather unexpectedly but not unwillingly, as in Balcony Scene.

  1. I take issue with the phrase “coming out” applied to the Snow Queen. She doesn’t seem to be at all disinclined for sex with men: on the contrary. It’s simply that no man has yet been able to get her to happily-ever-after before the relevant portion(s) of his anatomy freeze up.

Grier the Lesbian Mercenary was the only one to attain the necessary stamina (by wearing a snowsuit and an artificial penis), and naturally the Snow Queen remembers her very fondly. But I don’t think the Queen is intended to be lesbian rather than bisexual, although clearly Grier is.

But more than just inverting them for a laugh, I think she was actually poking fun at the ‘saving the princess’ trope as if it were an act of overcompensation. As if all heroes who save princesses are actually closeted gays who hide behind their exaggerated masculinity.

I think that may be going a bit too deep[sup]*[/sup]. I’m pretty sure it’s just ‘self discovery’ + ‘save the princess’ = ‘discover you’re the princess’. Followed by sex at the end for shock value.

*That’s what he said

I feel like she draws stuff she enjoys seeing and sniggers at everyone reading deep meanings into it.

See also Xandir from Drawn Together.

I dunno. Going back and reviewing it again I’m getting even more convinced that there’s some levels there. Consider this: the hero comes in at the beginning with a brash tone (not the typically charming, likable one that you’d normally expect). At the end he’s “never been so happy”. I don’t think it’s just a little twist at the end for a superficial joke. I think we’re supposed to see a sexually repressed person at the beginning.

In fact if she didn’t intend that it would be a shame, since it seems far more interesting when I see it in this light.

That’s fair. I’d forgotten about that one

So the Snow Queen’s been with guys before, and it was . . . Ok, but unsatisfying. She’s approached by a woman. A tall, confidant woman, with dark eyes. SQ blushes and stammers reluctantly. She’s only ever thought of men that way. Hasn’t she? She knows she should object, but the words won’t come. Strong hands ease her back onto the bed, and then.
And then.
And then.
And even months later, she still can’t stop thinking of her dark eyes and strong hands.

So, in conclusion, while I should have said ‘self-discovery,’ not ‘coming out,’ my point stands. Gay or bi, she didn’t identify that way before she met our friend with the braids.

Seems likely, but only due to her competence during the sex duel. We’ve never seen her actually interested in someone. She was all business with the SQ, and had to be badgered into said duel. The two smiles we’ve seen out of her were at a bag gold and the prospect of earning a bag of gold.

She’s snarky and dismissive of guys trying to pick her up, true. But also guys not trying to pick her up. And people she wants a job from. And sexy rogues she’s in cages. That doesn’t establish her as a lesbian, that establishes her as a jerk.

I’m glad she lost the rogue, even though I was rooting for her. Snarky, genre savvy characters get obnoxious when they win all the time.

Don’t forget this one, where a shapeshifter tries to trick her out of her reward for saving a village. When asked to describe her “type,” she says, “I’m after a hot woman - voluptuous - head is a big bag of freakin’ gold.” Leaving off the snark about the gold, that seems to be a pretty clear statement of sexual preference.

I didn’t forget it (I couldn’t, I use ‘The town is flammable’ line too often in causal conversation) but she’d just been asked if she wanted something with less cock. The answer was well within the bounds of sarcasm, especially since what she really wanted was a genitalia-free bag of gold.

Not arguing she’s not gay, mind you, just that she hasn’t been ‘clearly shown’ to be.

“Greer the Sarcastic Lesbian” sounds like a terrible SNL skit. The kind they’d run for 5 years.

I’d call that covered by the self-discovery angle, meself. He thinks he’s out to do a regular rescue job, but he gets hit with self-discovery and princessitude.

And because it’s semi-relevant, I’ve gotta link to a strip from a webcomic that’s like the polar opposite of Oglaf. (The punchline is machismo.)

I think that she’d be happy with just the big bag of freakin’ gold, though. Happier, in fact, since she wouldn’t have to deal with the rest of the woman. I think that her answer was just an eeensy bit snarky, you know?

She did, after all, ultimately burn down the town.

That’s absolutely hysterical. Thanks for linking it!

New panel is up. Ho hum. She just mailed it in this week.
Back to previous discussions, I’m just dying for the ink-twatted thief to get her comeuppance. If it happens, it’ll be epic.

The scrollover comment makes it good, if it’s indeed true that there is a lot of flirting at LARPs and similar gatherings, which I’ve heard.
Is it true? If the Dope can’t answer this, no one can.

I guess we can hope that this is just the start of rewarding arc.

It does seem weak. The lower right corner isn’t cut off to indicate that there are no more pages. I tried to get page 2 in the address bar, but I got the trolls instead.
