LOS ANGELES (AP) - The holders of the North American rights to the Winnie the Pooh characters have hired celebrity attorney Johnny Cochran to represent them in their 12-year legal fight with The Walt Disney Co. The heirs of Stephen Slesinger have alleged that Disney owes them millions of dollars because they miscalculated royalties due from the sales of Pooh dolls, books and other merchandise for years.
“Johnny,” Piglet said at last, and a little timidly, because
he didn’t want Johnny to think he was Giving In, “I was just
wondering. How would it be if we went home now and practised
your plea, and then tried it on the Jury to-morrow–or–or the
next day, when we happen to see them?”
“That’s a very good idea, Piglet,” said Johnny. “We’ll
practise it now as we go along. But it’s no good going home to
practise it, because it’s a special Ridiculous Plea which Has To
Be Shouted Very Loud.”
“Are you sure?” asked Piglet anxiously.
“Well, you’ll see, Piglet, when you listen. Because this is how it begins. The more I sue, tiddely pom----”
“Tiddely what?” said Piglet.
“Pom,” said Johnny. “I put that in to make it more suey.”
While Johnny Cochran is not my favorite human being, neither was Walt and neither is Mr. Eisner and, based on the travesty that the Mouse inflicted on the Bear, I kinda hope the Slesinger heirs win. (Although, I also hope they suffer substantial abuse during the process. This is one case where I get to root against all the participants.)
JERUSALEM (AP) – An Israeli cat has been banned from circulating freely in the stairwell of a suburban Tel Aviv apartment building, apparently because its jet black color was frightening the residents. “This is a black cat that on its way downstairs occasionally passes through the legs of building residents, some of whom are afraid of the cat, quite possibly because of its black color,” Even-Zor wrote to Dan and Ariel Morganstern. The Morgansterns objected to the order and engaged the services of Asaf Marx, a lawyer with Israel’s Cat Welfare Society. Marx wrote to Even-Zor, threatening to go to court if the order against Kooshi is not rescinded. “The city of Rishon Letzion doesn’t have a leg to stand on,” he said. “A veterinarian can issue an order like this only if an animal constitutes a threat to public health or to public order. Kooshi is clean, he’s been vaccinated and neutered, and is extremely well mannered. He’s being singled out only because of his color.”
“Look at this picture of Tigger,” said Johnnie Cochran. "Tigger is a stuffed animal who lives in the Hundred Acre Wood. Let me repeat that: Tigger is a stuffed animal who lives in the Hundred Acre Wood. This is not a place for stuffed animals. This does not make sense!
Ladies and gentlemen of the jury, I rest my case."
