oh for fuck sake mtv just fucking die please

fluiddruid,

heh what CDs to buy though? I know the bands I like now it’s new bands coming out that I’d like to hear and find. I suppose if I got truly desperate I could start lurking in music chat rooms or something.

You’re not understanding the area I’m in though. We have three places to buy CDs Walmart (censored trash) KMart (always understaffed and under-stocked) and Hastings (over priced) and they don’t get anything interesting in unless you request it. Can you believe in Hastings I asked when they were getting Powerman 5000 in they told me it would be a special order that would take two+ weeks to get in. (sheesh they did the same when I wanted to buy Spirited Away. I ended up ordering that online instead of waiting all that time)

You don’t have broadband, do you? I find Internet webcasts via iTunes and such solve my music blues.

At amazon.com, you can listen to little snippets from the first 4 or 5 cuts from just about any album.

heres a link for the version I use now,

here is a link for my choice in web stations, there are a ton of stations to check out, you can book mark them in winamp and they are almost certain (well once you weed out the ones that suck) introduce you to new music.

highly recomended.

Thanks for the suggestions guys. I’ll check them out.

In addition to webcasts like people have said, I’d also recommend finding an online music review journal type site that covers the genres you’re into. For any genre out there, you can find a site that reviews new and unknown artists, and the reviews (you don’t have to listen to the reviewers’ opinions) can at least give you an idea if you’ll like it and give you some new names to look into. I’ve found so many of my favorite artists through places like PitchforkMedia, Delusions of Adequacy, or Lost at Sea.

Those are mostly indie rock sites, I just threw them out to give you an idea of what I mean. You said you’re into Powerman 5000 and Disturbed, you might like a site like The PRP:

This might not be an answer you’re looking for, but XM Satellite Radio has a number of channels that play almost all of those bands, several on a very regular basis. I checked their database on XMfan.com (you have to be a member of the boards to use this feature), and Mark Farina, Frank Black, FishBone, 9 Lazy 9, Curve, Michael Penn and Southern Culture on the Skids came up as played artists, some as recently as today and some yesterday.
If you don’t have a problem paying for radio, and have enough to get the equipment, I strongly suggest you check it out. (Standard disclaimer applies: I’m not affiliated with/employed by XM, just a very satisfied customer.)

FM radio does indeed suck outloud - literally.

If you have digital cable or satellite, they usually have 10 - 40 music channels. No videos, but the music is by genre, there are no commercials, and, strangely enough (to me) they are completely uncensored.

Not half-bad - I listen to the alternative channel sometimes, and although it tends to get a tad repetitive, it is light-years beyond any radio station.

Did I mention no commercials?
