Oh God, another Recommend me thread -- Hacking & Craking

Hi.

I would like to watch movies that have something to do with computers and freaking, or whatever they call it now-a-days.

I am only familiar with “The Net” which sucked, and “Hackers” which was okay for it’s time.

The first movie I saw that dealt with this topic was WAR GAMES with Matthew Broderick.

Are they any other movies out there i’ve missed for one reason or another?

Thanks.

Dave

Sneakers
Swordfish

Thanks!

Is this all?

AntiTrust

I thought it was decent, even with Ryan Phillipe (His only other good movie I’ve seen is Way of the Gun).

I totally forgot about AntiTrust! Claire Forlani = Yum!

I can’t help judging this type of flick on technological accuracy, and on this basis Swordfish was abysmal. I’m no hacking expert, but I suspect viruses are not made with CAD/CAM programs.

On the Halle Barry’s skin basis, though, it was a pretty good movie.

All Hollywood movies involving computers have been absolutely pathetic. So we are really comparing different levels in the bottom of the sewer.

FtG’s standard complaint #45: when some text is being decoded, you see individual characters being converted into the plain text one letter at a time. Agggggh.

But Sneakers, War Games, and Hackers did have a couple of things based in reality. Not much, but a few. (War Games is near and dear due to its setting at the UofW. I knew people who worked in the computer center that were just like the guys in the movie. I was almost one of them.)

For similar computer/crypto movies I would recommend a couple classics:

Sebastian starring Dirk Bogarde and the stunning Susannah York. Also has a very young Donald Sutherland in a small role. Total 60s movie complete with psychedelic party scene. A very early movie that delves into the psyche of a super geek.

Colossus, The Forbin Project. While a low budget movie, it still made some good points and got into some old-style computer nerd things.

Prime Risk.
Not worth going out of your way for tho’, IMO.

You left out the mechanical “ching” sound. Or is that a separate complaint?

HIJACK

Standard REAL WORLD Complaint #3:
CRTs do not project the ‘screen’ onto a user’s face, so why do they in the movies?
Ref: Jurassic Park 1

Standard REAL WORLD Complaint #4:
Computers don’t understand conversational English! Especially for decrypting!
*Ex: C:>*decode project Dunlap <–What the Fisk?

Standard REAL WORLD Complaint #7:
Password cracking attempts do not take 3 tries!
*ENTER PASSWORD: *dog’s name ACCESS DENIED!
*ENTER PASSWORD: *birthdate ACCESS DENIED!
*ENTER PASSWORD: *dog’s birthdate ACCESS GRANTED!

Would you consider The Computer Who Wore Tennis Shoes.

I also rememeber, but not very clearly a move with perhaps Don Knotts or Dick Van Dyke where a computer was burried in a coffin in place of a person.
