Oh! I just got that! (sound of hand smacking forehead)

On more on the Dork-o-meter

Back when I was just a wee Feynnling I could never figure out why miners (minors) weren’t allowed into taverns. They were adults weren’t they? Did it have something to do with the dangers of their jobs? Why couldn’t they drink beer like everyone else? was it because they were dirty?

This puzzled me for quite a long time.

Sue Duhnym I got more or less right off the bat, but Tequila Mockingbird whooshed me for ages. Actually, I didn’t get it until I mumbled it out loud one day.

Matt:

“Tequila Mockingbird” was also the title of an episode of the TV series “Get Smart”. I think it was from their last year.

Okay, did everyone else also pronounce Sue’s name “Sue Die-numb” as well? Its all making sense…

OK, I can see why hypothetical character names like “Master Bates” or “Seaman Stains” would be considered risqué, but what’s the naughty implication of “Roger the Cabin Boy” that would make it any more wicked than the real character name “Tom the Cabin Boy”?? (check out the URL)

::preparing to get wooshed::

AHunter3:

Yeah. It’s not as common in American slang, but “Roger” is a verb meaning “to have sex with”, so to “roger” the cabin boy…

I must confess I don’t get the references to “Roxanne” either, so I must beg you to explain it to me :o

I can’t belive I’m admitting this. I must have heard this joke a hundred times before I got it.

“If I tell you you have a great body would you hold it against me.”

Same for Prince’s song “I Want to be Your Lover”

It contains the phrase “I want to be the only one you come for” I got that one just a few months ago. And I have the freakin album.

Oh I also didn’t get Sue Dunhym, nor do I know what thinksnow’s reference to Cecil means.

Nothing like the SDMB to make a guy feel dumb.

Two of my favorites that I didn’t get until I was much older:

Episode where Elmer Fudd is the giant from “Jack and the Beanstalk”. Daffy Duck is Jack. Bugs and Daffy are arguing over which of them is Jack. Giant Elmer gets disgusted, grabs them both and says “I guess I’ll have to open up with a pair of Jacks.”

It’s a poker reference! In a kids cartoon!

Another episode with Pepe le Pew doing his schtick, chasing after “La Petite Femme Skonk”. They are skiing and fly off a downhill platform. As they’re sailing through the air Pepe slams face-first into an oak. He looks at the camera, shrugs and says “Poems are made by fools like me.”

Wonderfully droll.

As far as SDMB user names I must offer a plug for my brother’s: Deacon’s Trucked

…and the only thing I know about “Roxanne” is that she’s a ‘working girl’. Viz: “turn on the red light” and “walk the streets for money”.

<Arthur>You’re a HOOKER?!? I thought I was just doing great with you!</Arthur>

Ok does anybody else notice any similarities to these 2 posters names when spoken aloud?

I had the same thought, and then I found this thread

Paul

I registered today simply to respond to this thread. My June Cleaveresque mom and I were at the mall when I was 12, and this voluptuous woman walked by wearing the tiniest skirt I’d ever seen. My mom declared, “if her skirt were any shorter, she’d need a hairnet!”

It took me years to figure that one out.

k, I feel stupid. I never could figure out what the pun was, and always read it as Sue done-him. duuuuuuuuuuuuh

When I was a whiny little kid, oh so many moons ago, I would often complain about my perceived inability to accomplish some task, usually one my mother had set me to doing. My mother would say, “Just do it!” to which I would whine, “I’m TRYYYYYYING!!” My poor exasperated mother would then mutter, “Yes, you’re VERY trying.”

Didn’t get that one until I was about 20 (long after I’d stopped whining).

It wasn’t until high school that I recognized the reference in the donkey’s name on Mr. Roger’s Neighborhood - Donkey Hodey, lived in the windmill…

Don Quixote.

Duh.

How about Meddle’s cover? It is light blue with the circular patterns on it. Know what it is? If you do, well, you know what an euphoric delight it was to suddenly “see” it during Echos, and with a mind nice ‘n’ open to seeing new things. Have no idea what I’m talking about? Well, go get the album and take a good look. Once you see it you’ll know why I posted this in the ‘obvious after you notice it’ thread. Beautiful subtlety by a subtlety beautiful band. Let me know if you don’t see it or are curious.

Okay…I see a giant upside-down nose

Is that it? (Never noticed it before) ::sound of hand slapping forehead:: Not the kind of thing that pushes me to feelings of euphoria, but to each his own, as my mind is nice ‘n’ open…

Floyd Fan Paul

Hey, Paul…I see the nose or maybe an alien wearing some big earrings. I don’t get it either. Maybe Rhythm will clue us in.

Hey folks,

Stare at it a bit longer… both of you are pretty close. I am of the ‘it is much better if I figure it out for myself’ crowd. But in case you’re not, it is
Spoiler space

Spoiler space

Unnecessary space, but here anyway….

Just about exactly what you think it is. There are two levels to the cover - underneath the circles is a photograph (a clear photograph, mind you. It might not seem that way if you are looking at a web image or just have the puny CD, but it is a clear (though blue) photo of an ear. Superimposed on the ear are ripples - echoes if you will, or sound waves, or whatever your mind imagines them to be.

No go put on the album!
